Decades of mismanagement. I took this photo (left)on a mountain bike ride mid August 2024, four months before the Palisades fire. Brush under high power lines has not been removed. This is 0.25 miles NW of Mandeville Canyon. I've ridden these trails since I was 8 years old and seen the change. Watering restrictions makes the air dryer, CO2 traps more heat that creates greater pressure differentials which drive higher wind speeds. The short of it, just filling a few reservoirs isn't going to do it. Orange County is recycling 120 million gallons per day of drinking water, LA County has Hyperion, one of the ten largest waste water plants in the world, 450 MGD, recycling a small fraction. I'm going to coin the term here of a 'massive sprinkler system'. The fire trails will need pipelines connecting reservoirs, at least 36" pipe, maybe 48" or 60" and branches off mains down other trails and massive sprinkler systems, huge commercial sprinklers that put out 1,000 gallons per minute and 300 foot radius (right). When the hot Santa Ana's blow, crank them on fed by recycled waste water, lots of flash evaporation and rapid cooling of surrounding air and an increase in humidity. The high winds with sub 10% humidity suck all the moisture out of everything. Sprinklers like this need to run a few times a week through all of the canyon passes, Topanga, Palisades, etc. Plants and trees soak up the water then when it is hot evapotranspiration cools the air. We can modify climate, and all those deniers, we've been doing it for decades by putting in black top highways that absorb heat and cars trapping heat with increased levels of CO2. It's science and the science of getting that trapped heat high up in the atmosphere so it can escape to outer space is done with water. It isn't a theory, it's known proven science. That is what evaporation does, huge energy to evaporate water at ground level, huge heat energy released when that evaporated water condenses high up in the atmosphere. This same principle applies to all areas in California that are high fire risk. The empirical evidence is Orange County. Go there, drive around, big lush green watered golf courses, green healthy trees lining the streets, a fraction of the fires that occur in LA and Ventura Counties. That is from decades of investing in infrastructure. I worked on pilot projects for part of that plant probably 15 years ago. That plant in Orange County, the largest of it's kind has won countless awards for design and engineering. So the obvious question, if it works so well, why aren't we putting them all up and down the state? Because homeless, meth and fentanyl take priority. This is a big expendeture but needs to be done to support the last 40 years of population growth.
