It’s actually not fair to blame Dangote Refinery for the persistent increase of fuel price when they also depend on global crude price for their own pricing. Despite the fact that Dangote gets crude supplies from majorly Nigerian Oil, it’s pertinent to note that the supplies come at global rate of Naira equivalent. Advantage of this to Nigeria is less pressure on foreign exchange whose effect can be seen clearly in our exchange rate overtime. Another advantage to Dangote is the logistics cost of delivering to jetty. This is why I have been consistent with my criticism of Dangote’s price reduction announcement because it does not make economic sense. It’s not a favor but a business reality and the refinery should be unapologetic about it. Especially if they are honest enough to effect price changes—upward or downward—as and when due.
