Daniel got important clarifications from NVIDIA. TLDR: the "DLSS5 skeptical" were right about *everything*. 1⃣ It's a 2D AI Filter. Input is only color buffer & motion vectors. The model doesn't see geometry, lights, PBR properties, normals, anything🧵 youtu.be/D0EM1vKt36s

NVIDIA's DLSS 5 announcement at GTC 2026 surprised even the studios featured in its showcase. Developers from Ubisoft and Capcom reportedly learned about the full generative AI details at the same time as the public. "We found out at the same time as the public," said one Ubisoft developer.

People legit think DLSS 5 is an AI face generator 💀 DLSS 5 has no mechanism with which it can alter geometry or the underlying asset. It just takes a game’s color & motion vectors & then adds more realistic lighting to the image. Nothing within DLSS 5 allows it to alter geometry

Grace was made from a photogrammetry scan - the DLSS5 version is objectively closer to that scan. It was done under the direction of the game team who made RE9. It is making some assumptions on lighting, but you can see all the stuff people are complaining about in the base model. She has eye shadow, she has lipstick on, etc. The original scene's lighting is VERY video gamey. I am really surprised that people are so invested in defending the absence of consistent specular highlights as some sort of intentional art direction and not an understanding that lights are computationally expensive and consistent tradeoffs are made to accommodate that.

Great article on what DLSS 5 is actually doing. I know everyone is looking at faces, but look at the leather jacket. Look at the correct lighting on the neck. Look at the light diffusion in the hair (which is VERY hard to do right with strand hair techniques). This is awesome.

All you guys roasting DLSS 5 like it doesn’t look better/is detracting from art direction are absolutely insane. The lighting and shading improvements are bonkers. If that was shown as a next-gen hardware reveal and not “AI” you guys would be going nuts like the Watch Dogs demo.

Don’t buy this. They did a full demonstration and reveal the way it was because they thought it looked great. If it looked bad, they would’ve just waited to have the devs show off how good it could look. GenAI isn’t here to produce art. It’s tricking you into thinking it is.

@maximilian_ I had your same reaction but this is NVIDIA's response. I think we are seeing initial showcases that have not been optimized or fine tuned by the developers at all yet. Grace Ashcroft won't look like that with DLSS 5 once Capcom actually tune it to their artstyle for example.

I went hands-on with @NVIDIAGeForce DLSS 5 across multiple games at GTC and the early "it's just a face filter" isn't the right take. The improvements to shadows, water, foliage, clothing, and even a coffee maker in Starfield are just as impressive as the character enhancements. I wrote up my full impressions including some details on the dual-GPU demo setup and the developer control story that I think matters quite a bit.
