Here’s a design story: It begins with my old friend & mentor @chipconley, Creator, Speaker, Author and Founder of many enterprises including @JDVHotels (@Hyatt brand) and Modern Elder Academy (MEA) meawisdom.com/contact/ We had previously designed Hotel Vitale and Adagio hotels for JDV in San Francisco. Chip called in 2011 about a former nursing home property in Palo Alto. A week later he picked me up at SFO and as we drove to the site. He explained how he wanted the hotel to embody the technology driven lifestyle at the heart of Silicon Valley. We immersed ourselves immediately and created a unique environment filled with countless original designs. The Epiphany opened to critical acclaim in 2014. See some images of our work here: mccartan.com/ProjectEpiphan… In 2015 this boutique jewel was acquired by @larryellison for a record setting price and immediately redesigned to become @NobuPaloAlto Everything we created, every single piece of finish and furnishing was replaced. Don’t get me wrong, we love the Nobu, it is beautiful. (we could design one too). This is just an example of how designers must be good at letting go… of their former loved ones. Creating great new work often means not being afraid to overwrite the old. Chip Conley (@ChipConley) is one of the most extraordinary people you'll ever meet. He was a founding member of the board of Burning Man, a board member at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, and at 26, he started a hotel called Joie de Vivre, which went on to become the second-largest boutique hotel chain in the world. After a near-death experience, he sold the hotel, and soon after, Brian Chesky recruited him to join Airbnb to help him transform the company from a fast-growing start-up into the world’s most valuable hospitality brand.
