The U.S. bird flu crisis is worsening. Since 2022, nearly 185 million food-producing birds have been lost to H5N1. 2025 was the worst year on record, with outbreaks across 25 states. The virus is now endemic in wild birds, making repeated outbreaks inevitable. Consumers have paid an estimated $14.5B more for eggs, and taxpayers ~$1.8B in response costs. Effective vaccines exist, but U.S. policy still relies on mass culling over prevention. It’s time to rethink the strategy. Vaccination must be part of the solution.
