This is such an insanely depressing story and I'm glad Engber picked it up. I have no idea why anyone would default to the assumption that Woody Brown wrote this novel. The only rebuttal seems to be that it's rude to point this out.

It is striking to me that I still see the occasional Led Zeppelin T-shirt on campus. That would be like me wearing a Benny Goodman T-shirt in college. On the other hand, it’s possible this says more about modern music than the stranglehold of old music.

I finished the book a few nights ago and this really jumps off the page, just how much contempt she has for anyone she comes across who's even a little conservative-coded. *Profound* lack of curiosity about a very big and (as she says!) interesting and messed-up country!

I hit 'share' on a Sky News article today. The article's headline auto-populated in the tweet. The headline was 'Transgender girls given until September to leave Guides'. Being a committed public gender critical reporter, I took this to be good news. But I made the unforgivable sin of not deleting 'Transgender girls' or replacing it with the word 'boys'. And now the deeply obnoxious cliche of online Terfdom is mad with me for failing their purity test.

@jessesingal Straightforward equivocation problem IMO.
When you say LLMs can (or might) X, is usually mean can produce output that is pretty dang close to what people do.
When other people say no they can't, they're usually denying some phenomenological experience of the LLMs "mind".

i think i'm being *slightly* glib but as i've said before i just find a lot of claims along the lines of "LLMs don't really X" to be a bit wobbly and prematurely triumphalist. folks should define their terms and say exactly what they mean

@jessesingal They also asked the model to rank harassment vs. torture vs. abuse and it ranked them differently. I doubt you will find people *that* incoherent. Regardless, I'm with you that there are other, much simpler and direkt ways of showing that LLMs don't think/understand.
