@redrumlisa There used to be a piece of graffiti near the centre of Leicester in the 80s, ‘Black & white unite. Class is the fight’. Ska and Two-Tone got this and felt hopeful. Alas a lot of cultural import from the USA which has more division and identity focus has cross pollinated here.

Class has always been a bigger obstacle to mobility than race. And this is now widening but no one really cares because its white working class people who are bearing the brunt of this. These are people no one cares about & has been stigmatised as backward looking, racist, left behind unable to catch up. The truth is they have bern purposefully left out.

@mjd7718 @redrumlisa @technopopulist Technology has had an impact too. My job back then was essentially what Photoshop does now. We used film, sellotape, a scalpel and a fine brush. It was skilled work. I was made redundant the moment my ‘time’ ended (4 years).

@MrAdamFrith @redrumlisa @technopopulist So at 16 you were on the 2026 equivalent of £26 an hour and £52 an hour on Saturdays? For an apprenticeship? Sounds bloody lovely. Who weakened the unions and moved the manufacturing offshore?

The boomers benefited from heavily subsidised higher education and the chance to buy relatively cheap housing, advantages that younger generations simply do not have. They also lived through extraordinary productivity growth and sustained rises in real wages. Yet many boomers now oppose new housebuilding and back parties that gold-plate pensions and pensioner perks, even when the long-term economics look increasingly untenable (ponzi-esque). That does not make younger generations saints. It does not. Millennials and Zoomers often flirt with bat-shit ideas that deserve robust criticism. But here’s the problem. How do you bring younger people onside if you immiserate them economically, lock them out of home ownership, and make family formation ever harder? Why should they buy into a system that appears indifferent to intergenerational justice or the basic social contract? Food for thought.

@mjd7718 @redrumlisa @technopopulist I think you know the answer to that! Back then ‘the print’ was highly unionised. Workers were very well paid and the directors were doing very well too. These days the ratio of earnings between the two are just far wider.

@mjd7718 @redrumlisa @technopopulist I left school at 16 in 1988 and was on £7.50 an hour on a printing apprenticeship. Time & a half for anything above 34 hours a week and £15 per hour if I had to go in on Saturday. Unions have been weakened since and manufacturing offshored. The issue isn’t Boomers v younger folk.

@redrumlisa @technopopulist Probably because they could leave school at 15 and work an unskilled blue collar job whilst still being able to afford to purchase a house and groceries. Imagine that!

I've decided that I'm going to report to the police the institutional child sexual abuse I suffered in Rhyl in the 1980s. My mother actually did report it in 1985, in which I was a 4 year old questioned by the police in front of my abusers.

As @mrJamesGraham comments, only 8% of people in the arts are from working class backgrounds. Opportunity must start in school - all children should have the right and opportunity to study creative subjects. #ArtsAndMinds @nazirafzal

@PriyamvadaGopal Rubbish. When you’re born and raised working class it is formative. You never grow out of it or leave it behind. It’s remains a part of you like the lettering in a stick of seaside rock.

Outstanding observation. Once you're an academic, sorry to say, you are not 'working-class' even if you grew up in a working-class household. A plumber installing heat pumps is working-class. Sorry, it's pretty simple that way.

@henrywinter @scastledine Re: PSR Is it not simply a case of finishing 8th in league after 3 seasons of European football & then relegation season after. We had a squad set up for European campaigns on wages to match. When we finished 8th I imagine we may have instantly fallen foul of PSR turnover:wages

@scastledine agreed, Steve. For the past decade one of the growth industries has been clubs taking on lawyers to deal with PSR. Di Marco did a great job on the club's PSR breach charge appeal in 2024.

Plenty good about Leicester City, academy, support, facilities, but what's befallen them recently is a painful sequence of events that fans at many other clubs beware: a naïve owner; bad decisions; stars sold; overpaid under-performing players; uninspiring football... 1/2
