@luigidemeo As I just had my first kid(he’s less than a week old), I totally get where you are coming from.

One of the hardest things about being so focused on your career is that it can be at the expense of your family. Since taking some time off, it’s clear to me that it doesn’t have to be this way. After grinding really hard during my career and especially so the past 5 years, I’ve been taking some time to think about things I’ve done well and areas I need to do better. One of those areas was with my kids… My children are 9 years, 7 years and 8 months old. Previously, I struggled to connect as much as I wanted and found it difficult to listen to them. I was very short and self consciously felt annoyed when they would be interrupting on “my” time that I deemed for myself or for work. It’s easy to say that I was just so busy, but this is largely just an excuse. What I’ve been realizing more and more is that I needed to be much more intentional with them. Talk more, be empathetic, yet firm. Realize that they just want to spend time with me, learn with and from me and that they can do much more for themselves than you might give them credit for. Give them agency in life and allow them to make inconsequential mistakes and deal with the consequences. While it’s an ongoing learning process, I feel better about how to parent and grow with my family for whatever I decide to do next in my career. I realize that many parents likely also feel this way. I recently read this book and found it helpful. “Raising mentally strong kids,” by Charles Fay and Daniel Amen. Sometimes you just need to take a step back to move forward.

Instead of changing clocks twice a year, what if we fixed time zones altogether? The continental US should only have two time zones! fix by: • Merging PT & MT (move PT forward 1 hr) • Merging ET & CT (move ET back 1 hr) The east and west coasts would be just one hour apart. We'd pretty much eliminate jet lag within the US. Teams could work together more easily. The whole country would have more shared hours of daylight and collaboration. Time zones were created for coordination and commerce. Until 1883, every city in the US had its own local time based on the sun. Then railroads came along and it was chaos... so the railroads standardized to four zones. Some cities still didn't follow this so congress passed the standard time act in 1918. We’re far more integrated now. So much of our work, trade, and communication happens in real time across coasts. The logic that gave us four time zones no longer fits how we actually live... on the internet! Downside: it would cheat some people out of a little bit of daylight. But actually not much, since we're used to it with daylight savings time anyway... and far bigger places are on one time zone. Alaska was 4 time zones and moved to 1, all of China is 1 time zone, etc. Railroads reshaped time 100 years ago and the internet should do it again!
