my 2 cents about China:
you are talking about 2 completely different countries on the same land, and most westerners are only familiar with one of them, resulting in completely opposite opinions:
1) the elites’ china in tier 1 cities, expensive as hell and 10x harder to live a decent life than Seattle based on my personal experience; eg an avg apartment can cost US$2 million there
2) the avg people’s China, in small towns, with low income but at the same time the living cost is almost free (eg $1 for a bowl of beef ramen & no tipping)
for the avg people, in worst cases, you can sleep on the streets for a whole year without worrying about safety at all, even for a young girl, as hundreds of cameras are watching every corner; also, you can ask for a free bowl of ramen from a different restaurant every day and 90% chance the owner will say yes, and there are a 1000+ ramen shops in every town.
