We, the Indian Muslims, are victims of terrorists in India who identify themselves as Hindus and attack us for our identity. We are forced to convert to their religion, abuse our own faith, chant their religious slogans and sing their religious songs. If we resist, our lives are not spared. If we give in, we may still be assaulted but allowed to live.
We suffer at the hands of Hindu mobs that lynch us simply for being visibly Muslim, on the suspicion of eating or storing beef, despite India being one of the world's largest exporters of beef. We are targeted for praying, for practicing our faith openly and even for running businesses. There are organized calls to boycott Muslim businesses, force them to shut down and prevent Muslims from buying or renting property. We are subjected to dehumanizing rhetoric, including public calls for our genocide. They have even called for Muslims to be stripped and paraded naked, with such threats directed not only at Muslim men but also at Muslim women by Hindu men and women.
These mobs operate through organized networks and groups that openly mobilize against Muslims, engage in harassment and participate in large scale communal violence. These mobs record videos of their attacks and upload them to social media without facing any meaningful consequences. Once the violence is over, it is Muslims who not only suffer the losses and trauma but also face arrests, detentions and legal action.
These terrorists are allowed to roam freely with no meaningful restrictions, bans or laws specifically aimed at stopping them. Our homes, businesses and places of worship are demolished under allegations of illegal construction whenever we attempt to resist such attacks, speak out against them or protest within our constitutional rights. Even peaceful opposition and verbal dissent are met with collective punishment and intimidation.
The media and other institutions do not adequately report these incidents or address them because they operate under the influence of the very system that enables our persecution and gives a free hand to the mobs who target us. This has gone largely unnoticed for over a decade because these cases remain underreported.
Indian Muslims comprise one of the largest Muslim populations in the world, with more than 200 million Muslims living in India. When the state and a community that constitutes around 80% of the country's population stand against a minority that makes up roughly 15%, it becomes your duty to raise our concerns on international platforms.
We urge journalists, human rights organizations, policymakers, academics and civil society groups to document these incidents, raise awareness, demand accountability and ensure that the condition of Indian Muslims is not ignored by the world.
We're in the process of being ethnically cleansed and we urge you to take this matter seriously.
