10/ The decision to employ military force should always be based on a cost/benefit analysis, and not just a reactionary gesture to “do something”, regardless of the reality. It is extremely hard to see any upside of going on an archer hunt in this scenario.

There have been quite a few politicians calling for the UK to join strikes against Iran, particularly against those systems posing any threat to UK bases and personnel. Let me explain some of the challenges with taking that approach. Let’s start with the threat. 🧵1/10

Where do the Nicknames Pompey & Guzz come from? Guzz @HMNBDevonport is almost certainly taken from an Indian measurement of a Guzz which was almost a yard, therefore it was nicked by Plymouth sailors as a name for ‘The Yard’. Pompey @HMNBPortsmouth is more contested by my 1/2

On my way to ikea and I’ve accidentally come to a gorgeous rooftop bar overlooking Regent Street instead. Haven’t been here for a few years. Used to be a tiny standing only rooftop, but they’ve expanded it nicely. A perfect place to sit with a wine in the sunshine. IKEA can wait.

20 Mar 1929, Ferdinand Foch, died, aged 77. 26 Mar 1918, made Supreme Commander of Allied Armies five days after powerful German Spring Offensive. Accepted German surrender in Nov 1918. Viewed Versailles Treaty as treason, ‘this is not peace. It is an armistice for 20 years’ #WW1

Trump should be focussed on bringing his “excursion” to a close, not denigrating an alliance that he didn’t consult on, or include in, his plans. If opening the Straits is so simple with so little risk why doesn’t the USN get on with it?

Pete Hegseth says 7,000 US missile strikes in Iran have been "applied with precision", as long as you're happy to ignore the odd school being hit

Old "Buff" piping up.... The guy who sold off 20% of the Royal Navy's Type 23 frigates and... ...insisted, for political reasons, on the cursed WR-21 gas turbine that's hobbled the Type 45 Destroyer fleet, and cost countless hundreds of £££, and reduced availability by decades.

'This would double the risk to the West.' Defence Secretary under Tony Blair, Geoff Hoon, says that sending a British warship to the Strait of Hormuz would leave it as a 'sitting duck'.

@snoozy60 They were on their way back from wherever they'd just been mid-afternoon, so comfortably home in time for their usual weekend start on Wednesday evenings!

@TallyWicke67261 @TimWinRN All those actions were in America’s interest. Did Europe benefit, yes, but the ultimate global power and industrial powerhouse that emerged was the USA. It wasn’t for charity. It remains in their national interest to remain firm allies with Europe, Trump is now discovering why..

@TallyWicke67261 @gregbagwell Not really when the wrong version of history is peddled. The US clearly tipped the balance within the conflict, but only joined out of self-interest and then extracted huge reparations from allies. That's ok, nations should protect interests, but let's not confer saviour status!

BREAKING: After Trump urged nearly every allied nation to send naval ships to help keep the Strait of Hormuz open, and getting rejected, the U.S. is now holding off on deploying additional warships to the region. Navy officials warn that Iranian drones and anti-ship missiles could turn the area into a “kill box” for American sailors. This administration is clueless. Expect oil prices to continue soaring.

@The_East_End I went hop picking for a summer job before joining the RN. It was backbreaking work from dawn til dusk. Cash in hand, mostly spent in the pub each evening quenching our thirsts with the output of the previous year's harvest!

I’ve mentioned hop picking in many previous posts, and I’ve dug out this little video to show you. The Garden of England comes alive. It was bloody hard work, but to many East Enders (and others) it was a welcome break from the smog and pollution of the capital… #eastend #hops

This incredible drone footage marks the end of the Orban era in Hungary. The opposition party TISZA gathered hundreds of thousands of Hungarians less than a month before the general election. HUNGARY WILL BE FREE!
