A few hours into Crimson Desert. Controls are more than most games but it's still fine IMO. The annoying part is the fickle interaction with things moreso than the button scheme. Opening sewer door took longer than it should have lol

@AI_EmeraldApple Yeah I don't think Crimson Desert is like that either. Steam reviews largely mirror the mean critic reviews. The difference is Elden Ring and Hollowknight have a level of polish that I don't think crimson desert has right now. I don't think this is a journalist thing at all

@_Goldensilver_ 90s games' level of obtuseness trumps any modern games, even Elden Ring. Oftentimes, there were no hints, "hunting for pixels", and clicking on the wrong things = sudden death. Do the wrong thing, and you softlock your game, and you have to go to an older save.

Crimson Desert really has become the ultimate filter between "gamers" and "tourists". Tourists like the hand holding, the yellow paint, the obvious click here, go there... Gamers like the friction, the puzzles, and the "what ifs"... It's like anime going mainstream, where stories and topics have become far more "tame". Ever since games have become far more mainstream than in the 2000's, games have become simpler, and gameplay mechanisms much more obvious. In the 90's, many games were incredibly difficult, and that's the point. It wasn't the kind of reaction/combat gameplay like hollow knight, or elden ring. Things were obtuse, no quest markers, and where you had to go next was not obvious. You had to think and reason about what the developers were trying to do. Today, tourists encounter a simple puzzle that most gamers have zero problem with, and they crash out and quit. I think this is why Crimson Desert won't ever gain the massive audience it could get because the bar of entry is a little high.
Narwitz@SophiaNarwitz

My sheer confusion at the 2:24 mark of this clip when someone in chat told me that people quit the game over this 'puzzle'. I have since been sent clips of people being lost, and uhhh... not to be a dick, but what???

@Teltae @AI_EmeraldApple Which is the problem with going in with a narrative and trying to squeeze things in to fit it. As opposed to just trying to see things as they are and draw conclusions from that.

@Teltae @AI_EmeraldApple I do not think Elden Ring is simple tho. That game is massive and gives almost no hand holding. What he's trying to do is justify why those other games scored really high even among critics, like it's some hidden difficulty factor that CD has that ER doesn't.

@mythical_meier @TimAkers Yep. One could compellingly argue that Sanderson books don't actually have magic, what the characters actually have are superhero like abilities.

@TimAkers Understanding magic turns it into technology. The magic system needs to outside rational understanding to be magic. Maybe that's one of the reasons I stopped reading Sanderson.

Sanderson: a satisfying ending requires a clear understanding of the magic system. Tolkien: the magic system is friendship.

@I_DO_JUEGOS For sure, but if reviews stay low then the long tail of the sales could be bad. They have a great initial amount, but it's not enough. So they definitely need them to keep coming in.

@MugenLord Yep. Lots of goalpost moving. People will point towards player count and say CD made a lot more money. But we aren't debating financials here, game quality is what matters. Madden makes a ton of money but let's not pretend it's because the games are just so expertly crafted.

Things are about to get interesting over the next couple of days. I believe Crimson Desert is about to receive the same Criticism and Defense from the gaming community as Marathon did. As I said, Crimson Desert won't be for everyone, and I got slammed for saying that. I was told that I just don't like games that try something bold and creative. But when I said Marathon isn't for everyone, and it takes time because of its learning curve. I was told that if a game takes that long for you to grasp, then it's poor game design. Yet I am seeing players and reviewers say Crimson Desert takes some getting used to before you really enjoy the game. Oh boy, this discourse is about to get interesting, and I am all for it. The goalpost moving and hypocrisy are about to be in full force with this one, lol.

@AI_EmeraldApple The answer is simple & you avoid it. These scores at large sites differ because they are reviewed by different people. You simultaneously bash mainstream journos then uplift Tassi's review. You cherry pick points to support an argument that isn't compelling.

Only time will tell how Crimson Desert will really do, but no one trusts mainstream journalists anymore, except the out of touch asian investors who havn't figured out that Western journalists lie. IGN rated Concord and Highguard a 7, and they both went out of service due to being a massive flop. IGN also gives Dragon Age: The Veilguard a 9, and it was a commercial failure. Eurogamer also gave Black Myth Wukong a 3/5, the same score as Crimson Desert, and Wukong was a massive commercial success. Meanwhile, Eurogamer also scored the commercial failure Dragon Age game, a 5/5. Why? Not for the stated reason, but for all the nitpicky reasons why Crimson Desert is "bad". like UI choices, gameplay mechanics, and the MMO "feel" of the game. They are calling it "prestige Candy Crush" characterless world, undercooked story/characters, regressive quests... But the real unstated reason? No LGBTQ representation. Violence against "protected gender", equal violence against women and men. No forced diversity. No contemporary politics in the game. Meanwhile, others rated it very high with Forbes at 9.5 and DualShockers at 9.5. Paul Tassi says "I've never seen anything like this" spending over 100 hours into the game before writing a review and claiming he has never been bored.

I see people in the industry trying to dunk on this. But that's just because so many games journalists are stuck writing about video games instead of what they actually wish they were reporting on: politics. Lots of pent up frustration out there 🤣
Luke Stephens@LukeStephens

@LegacyKillaHD I predicted after the preview that this is one that game journalists will loathe. There is zero hand holding and even at the preview event I witnessed several journalists from big outlets getting stuck in the tutorial puzzle for 45 plus minutes...

@BloodWenchLN This is really about how strongly positive the critical reception was vs how the game was actually received. Hard to find many examples where media gives out such solid scores to a game that ends up killing the series lol

The discourse surrounding Crimson Desert after the reviews hit yesterday just showed me a lot of people just crave the social part of this hobby without actually wanting to engage in the hobby itself. I didn't have early access to this one, looking forward to jumping in later.
