I think I figured out why the shooter at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner never actually got shot, even though a Secret Service officer fired at him. They formed up in a full 360 around him the second he came charging through that checkpoint. In that circle, every agent had another agent standing right across from them. One round toward the bad guy and you’re looking at friendly fire — your bullet could easily hit one of your own people on the other side. That’s why the shots missed and they ended up tackling him instead. **Post 2/3** Here’s what I keep thinking about: there’s a smarter way to set this up when everything happens in 25 seconds or less. Instead of a perfect circle, you use an **L formation** — two groups at a right angle, like the corner of a room. All your fire lanes point straight into that open corner where the threat is. No one’s shooting across at each other. Or you go hammer-and-anvil: one team pins him down and keeps his attention, while the other team moves to a clean side angle and takes the shot safely. These aren’t new ideas. SWAT and military teams use them all the time for exactly this reason. **Post 3/3** The guys on the ground last night still did an incredible job. They stopped an armed man from reaching a ballroom full of the President and 2,600 other people, kept everyone safe, and took him into custody with almost no one hurt. That’s a win. I just wonder if folding L-shapes or hammer-and-anvil into the training playbook could give teams even safer options next time. When the clock is ticking that fast, geometry matters maybe? Again not LEO or military. And NOT judging. They have a guy to interrogate. (Just a regular person who’s been turning this over since the footage dropped. Thought it was worth saying out loud.)
