i interviewed three US clothing factory owners last year. they were chomping at the bit to implement AI robotics technology. if factory jobs return, they wont be like the ones that built the middle class in the 1950s

@IsVittra @chibikaijuu @jstclair1 @dieworkwear I really love this mini thread. Turns out that the making of clothing is the actual Turing test. I'm a leatherworker and same distinctions apply - straight lines and simple stitching can be automated like a nissan engine, complex patterns in 3 dimensions = miles away

@chibikaijuu @jstclair1 @dieworkwear Knits & slinky fabrics are already a struggle to get to behave with fingers, clips & pins. And the seams are very limited in comparison to earlier hand sewn creations. Same with the embroidery. Hands are going to be the cheaper option for a long while yet.

If you have seen videos of animals being brutally killed through halal slaughter, you would support banning it too. I won't share them. It is vile. We should not unnecessarily subject our animals to such cruel and barbaric suffering. It is simply not the British way.

Meghan McCain's husband blocked me, so I can't retweet (also my mom got really excited once when I told her that Meghan McCain's husband tweeted about me). But this sort of attitude is why some people will never be stylish. Let's talk about Bernie Sanders's style. 🧵

@davelostdave @ThatsAdamPrice @rail_guns Pleased this is settled now and we'll get our new bridge. Displeased about yet another 'friends of...' group wasting everyone's time and money. On balance am erring happy thanks to the appearance of Jane Jacobs and John Stuart Mill in a chat about cycling around grandpont

50% of large infrastructure projects in the UK ends up in court, adding around 18 months & costing the taxpayer millions This walking & cycling bridge in Oxford is one of these projects. The judicial review just found in favour of the bridge so let me walk you through it 🧵

@FeldyJan @XeraCalm77 @ZenNicCage @ArmandDoma Bet you have some tales to tell. I've worked on a few online booking systems like this. Approaches vary but true integrations are rare. Shared databases (or synched exports) but a separation of concerns between the new online code and existing core.

@XeraCalm77 @ZenNicCage @ArmandDoma I worked for Airlines back in the day. And the reservation, fares, Weight & Balance systems were written in Basic Assembler. Years later (after my time), I know things changed a lot, but I don’t know how. And I have no idea how online booking systems integrate …

@duckrabbitblog @JAMortram I get it and can see where you have been nuanced. The unfairness? Such a detailed and forensic focus in response to such a condemnatory post in itself sends a message. "Fails the humanity test" probably would hurt many photographers - but Jim? It's context again I guess

@elambert @JAMortram Which tweet is unfair Eddy? Quote me. I'm quite specific in my thread. Criticism of Jim's work appeared on my timeline. I gave a balanced view and expressed one of the reasons I stopped wanting to see Jim's work.

I quietly unfollowed Jim some years back and stopped supporting his work when I saw he'd turned a disturbing image of his Mum into a decontextualised Facebook cover photo.

@duckrabbitblog Ok. There's a valid point lurking in there perhaps but it takes mere minutes to look into the context here before targeting the ethics of the photographer (and here the subject) so stridently on Twitter.

@elambert Context matters. If you remove it. Especially when it's an image of a vulnerable person in your care don't be surprised when a social worker of 30 years calls you exploitative. Even though in my thread I defended Jim I am not surprised.

@duckrabbitblog I'm a long time admirer of your work and don't want to overegg the point but we both know @JAMortram is NOT a powerful agency photographer, NGO or media conglomerate so critiquing his deeply personal work in this way on Twitter feels both unfair and maybe a 'power' problem too

@duckrabbitblog That an image made as part of a wider body of work with full consent, in the context of a close and trusting relationship and shared not only with full consent but as the whole purpose of the exercise should be judged as though it were made by an exploitative stranger.

@duckrabbitblog This is a confusing thread. It seems to me that Jim is a photographer who considers these questions and many more constantly. Including here. If Jim and his mother decide that this image tells their truth that is power they hold, noone else. A painful image but a loving one.

Dignity is a human right. Photogs/film-makers can reflect it (sometimes gift) or they can take it (consciously or otherwise). Rarely are we taught why this matters. Because to get on in photography it doesn't. That's a problem.

We know the England team losing the #EURO2024 is the worst outcome for some, for others however it's the reality of waiting for their partner to come home. Football doesn't cause #DomesticAbuse, abusers do. Share our helpline so women know they are not alone 👇🏼👇🏿

@spectator This is a beautifully written harrumph from Jane Robins. "The portly line judges peering over blue-striped bellies, hands splayed on white-trousered knees, exhibiting all the concentration and intensity of a surgeon about to make his first cut. " 🫡

@RevRichardColes Every successful movement for change has had a strand which alienates or seems counter productive at the time. "They have a point but I disagree with the means". The rioters, martyrs or even just irritants. These aren't the 'planners' they're the disruptors.
