Check out these breaking waves above the ocean just offshore of North Myrtle Beach Friday. These are harmless Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds that form when a fast-moving layer of air slides on top of a slower layer of air near the surface. When the difference between the wind speed increases to a certain point, the waves "break" and their crests lurch forward. It's nearly identical to how waves break in the ocean. This may be one of the most memorable icing model runs I've ever seen for this region. The HRRR simulates 30+ hours of freezing rain in north central/northwest Mississippi. It never gets above freezing in the model. Just nonstop icing. Really a remarkable event.

Let me set the scene: It’s March, and the models are PRINTING the perfect conditions for violent tornadoes over a metroplex but it’s still 30+ hours out. Is it appropriate to start posting “Violent tornado outbreak is going to devastate this metroplex, you need to prepare now” Then proceed to post about how this is a HISTORIC once in a lifetime or blah blah storm to get the public riled up? Obviously it’s not ok, so why are we doing it with a Winter Storm when it was 100+ hours out? State the facts not the hype. We obviously have a significant storm lining up but quit with the over hype and trigger words. It’s getting obnoxious to the general public and breaks trust. #wxtwitter
