All leading economies of the world have rates between 0-20%. some of the prominent VAT rates in countries are as follows: Hongkong: 0% UAE: 5% USA : 7.5% UK: 20% Singapore : 9% KSA: 15% New Zealand: 15% Japan: 10% GST / VAT rates of 35% on top of already highest income slab of 35%+ cess will make things impossible even for slightly better off people. Instead of increasing further taxes the govt should look into widening the tax base... alternate sources of revenue generation.. already we as stock market participants are being taxed on an increasing basis every year and now to generate high returns from trading is becoming a bigger challenge.
