New York transplants may be the most provincian people in the US. It's the Year of our Lord 2026, dude, unless you're plonking down $400 per person (which you are not) the median resident of Avon Lake, OH can buy the same food as you, cheaper.

@MattCrivelli @GarethElton See now - that at least looks solid. Compared to the sad, deflated plastic wrap variant in the first pic. Next time I’m back in London, I’ll try one of these after a few pints and I bet it’ll be amazing

I’ve spent 10 years in both the UK and USA as an adult and it’s really just not any different. Maybe compared to like wonder bread or the lowest quality stuff, but in general at restaurants and bars they’re about equal quality. The bakeries in tier 1 US cities are genuinely as good as anything I’ve found on the continent. And this plastic wrapped bread is not going to magically not be dry and shitty

@shrike4113 Yeah. In general I think American food options are amongst the best in the world, but there’s nothing like a breakfast buffet in hotels in Asia (and Europe as a distant 2nd)

@GeordieApe For example - Turkey v Australia last night was a midnight kickoff eastern US time. If US broadcasters were maximizing revenue that match would have been more like 6:30p pacific / 9:30p eastern. But FIFA wants a morning match for Asia.

I assumed so originally, but after researching it, it’s pretty clearly FIFA. American broadcasters only have NA rights. FIFA auctions off commercial rights to each other country and they keep most of that money. FIFA needs to expand revenue which is why they’re trying this and pushing back start times of matches to make sure more matches are viewable in Asia. The US advertisers have limited leverage. It drives me nuts, but my guess is we’ll start seeing this is UEFA and maybe prem in 3-5 yrs as well 😕

These hydration breaks at the world cup are shit. Completely spoils the flow of the game and is just a scam for America advertisers.

@GarethElton Yeah it’s a shame that it’s happening during the World Cup too when we should all be coming together for a higher cause (making fun of the Italians for missing out again)

@BrettMendoza_ It’s 100% a FIFA trying to get more money thing. And if there are shadowy figures pulling the strings at FIFA, it’s not the Americans lol

Why are there hydration breaks, when the game is indoors? It's just so Americans can have quarters and commercial breaks isn't it?

God I love this app at times An American slagging off British food whilst making a tikka masala An American saying they have great cheeses in America and telling me I should import Wookey Hole, a British cheese, for that authentic US cheese experience.

@GoldbergCFC Man, if I was Chelsea I’d be worried. Hes one of only a few leaders on the team and we just saw what happened to Tottenham and west ham. If it doesn’t come with some big signings, I’d be nervous

@Uziworth @scfccarwyn Yeah absolutely. The consumerism here is shocking. That said it’s also a story of relative wealth. More discretionary income and far higher numbers of successful local companies. Whereas most big European teams are reliant on sponsorships from foreign companies.

@mindthealign @scfccarwyn It makes sense, americans love advertising and spending money alot more than in the uk. So ads are worth more since the audience spends more

US stadiums are objectively brilliant, I’ll never understand the discourse around them on here over the last few weeks. Would they work in the UK? No. We care more about practicality than spectacle. We want to feel like we’re on the pitch. Are they still unreal? Yes.

@lawlorlara @Average_Jonas Yeah which is a travesty and absolute failure for such a rich nation. I’m an expat living here and the basic point I’m making is simply that if you’re already an upper middle class or upper class wage worker, the compensation and life outcomes are DRAMATICALLY better in the US

Maybe this is a hot take but as someone who lived in the US for 4 years before moving home to Norway, I think the US is a great country to visit, not to live in. You get all the benefits of how grand the experiences are in culture, weather, nature, food, sports etc but you don’t have to worry about healthcare, overpaid housing, taxes that fund wars instead of your well-being and a lacking infrastructure. I understand it’s a big country and I only lived in Los Angeles (which is worse than most other American cities) but you only need one small medical issue to realize how messed up the system is. Also Trump.

I don’t understand if this is a serious question? Of course, people spend time with families and loved ones, read, travel, cook and eat. We fight and love and play sports and visit museums and parks. We’re all humans :) And we all have to work to pay the bills. The advantage of making more is that you can choose to retire early. There are tons of 45 yr olds around here who are done working because they’ve made enough to never need to work again. If we all have to work, we may as well make more money is the basic idea.

@mindthealign @Average_Jonas And once you've made a little money, what then? What do Americans do if they don't have to work? Do you guys read books and stuff like that? Or just money money money?
