I’m pausing Sordaneon for a while because I want to wait for the physical copy to arrive 😔😭 Really hoping it won’t take the usual 3–4 weeks Kinokuniya estimates for imported/out-of-stock books… 2 weeks at most please I’m begging 😭

I agree with this, but I also think a lot of writers lack the skill to fully immerse their readers in the worlds they create. Sometimes their world building feels more mechanical than mystical.
felicity 📖@belladonnafeli

I feel like many modern fantasy novels don’t feel fantastical because a lot of these writers are writing a story they want to be adapted onto the big screen. Therefore we lose the charm and sort of wonder of fantasy. Obviously this doesn’t apply to every modern author,

@thebrainlete Wait I should’ve given actual books 😭 for incredible prose and overall insane storytelling (to me 😭): The Realm of the Elderlings (Robin Hobb), Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (Tad Williams), The Triempery Revelations (L.L. Stephens), and Wars of Light and Shadow (Janny Wurts)

@minncoma While we are on this topic, do you have any recommendations for incredible prose you could share? 🥹

@thebrainlete Ooo what genre are you into? 👀 I mainly read epic fantasy, so my recs lean that way 😭 But for prose I’d say Robin Hobb (immersive/emotional), Janny Wurts (dense and layered), Tad Williams (rich and atmospheric), and L.L. Stephens (really solid, polished storytelling overall)

@LoneDroog Yeah that’s fair 😭 I can see why a more direct style would feel less cringey. I haven’t read him yet, but I’m actually looking forward to it now 👀👀

@minncoma Yeah he is very character voice heavy and not that good at world building . But compared to other modern writers, I kinda feel way less cringed by his prose cause he's so direct at times. I know it seems contradictory but with the audiobook combined it seems so heavy.

After reading a few fantasy books (some of which I’m still currently reading) with genuinely masterful prose, going back to some modern fantasy feels… a bit too simple 😭

@minncoma sometimes it feels like wandering through a beautiful meticulously decorated Victorian house then walking into a new build black and white box made of papier-mâché and construction paper. like yeah they are both houses. but

@minncoma There are still modern fantasy books with good prose. The House of Vermin, The Spear cuts through Water, The Wings Upon her back, The Raven Scholar... Though admittedly they're often not the most popular.
