@ettingermentum Still kinda disappointing that America can never just fully admit their president sucks. Francois Hollande had polls at like 14% approval rating towards the end of his presidency!

@jarredsumner Did you ever do something on this? We see this pretty consistently (wouldn't mind paying for an easy to manage mirror that just doesn't 500 but I don't think that's a product that exists lol)

npm 500s in bun’s CI sometimes and bun install currently only retries on timeouts or connection failure. Maybe we should retry on 5xx too

@kellogh @mitsuhiko @mitchellh One underrated component of lobsters is that you totally can be banned for being (for lack of a better word) annoying. If you’re constantly generating stupid fights you get banned. A couple of sites could benefit from this rule…

@kellogh @mitsuhiko @mitchellh I am still very happy to have a place that tries to have focused technical content, but I simply do not look at the comments section of anything with over 30 comments. I don’t even look at the story! Anything with too many comments tends to just be some annoying back and forth

I really don’t like that when lobsters removes a story it also deletes the comments. There was some really good commentary by @mitchellh attached to my 996 post and now I can’t read it any more.

@mitsuhiko Really wish we had a way to open a new connection in pg within the same transaction for this kind of reason (I think a lot of people up their CI spend and just don’t write deep integration tests tho….)

In the past I usually wrote tests against postgres stuff by creating a transaction and rolling back. This is getting harder and harder, particularly if you have more than one service. I wonder what people do nowadays for tests to run efficiently and concurrently.

Totally hear you. While there's no option to turn off title translations, you can try changing your preferred language on YouTube. We use signals to automatically match a video's language (title, description, and captions) to viewer preferences. More info here: goo.gle/3GnuzxV

@mitsuhiko I’ve seen this pattern on a couple libs in the past (docker and softlayer API clients, I think stripe as well?) and it works out nicely. Softlayer even had a “forward compatible”thing where api.thing.create would “work” even if thing wasn’t defined thanks to getattr magic

@paxfulania @osamabishounen Why do I keep on seeing this person in my feed? He’s not even a person with a real job yet! Adults shouldn’t be talking about him! This guy and the annoying “YIMBY for Harris” guy with the worst fit imaginable in his pfp seem to be able to eternally be in discourse.

@GergelyOrosz Maybe some of these parts get sent back to be looked at? I have my doubts they would ever be put back into circulation but at least there would be some investigation?

Food for thought that throwing out a component is cheaper and more economical than doing a bit of engineering (eg measuring out a problem with a panel and fixing it - in my case, it was likely a contact issue somewhere) It feels like such a wasteful approach... even though I get why it's more economical like this.

A part of my fridge broke while under warranty. Mechanic turns up and replaces the full back panel. Asked him if debugging and fixing the fault would be an option. His response: "That would take longer because that is engineering work. They don't pay us enough to do it."

I have so many questions. Like why does it have two template engines (jinja2 and mako)? Why does it have a markdown library? Why does it pull in sentry and opentelemetry? Why does it use six? 71 packages for this?

@adamjohnsonCHI Like there are so many people who talk about Netanyahu being “the” problem, but on World I remember them talking about the gnarlier dynamics even pre Oct 7th during the one of many“is Netanyahu done for” events. That the people in the wings aren’t necessarily better for peace.

@adamjohnsonCHI Putting Tommy Vietor on the header image here feels pretty unfair. On his pod (World) at least I feel he’s pretty consistently talked about how the alternatives to Netanyahu are people with “bad” positions. Maybe the PS people need the pressure to be more explicit though

Cowardliness and vapidity of this nonanswer aside (peak One Bad Man Theory) it is beyond racist and depraved, 22 months into this genocide, to continue to center the feelings and needs of the country carrying out the genocide. Absolutely vile and dehumanizing to Palestinians

@SamtheNightOwl @duns_sc0tus The weirdest thing about “the discourse” on “they” is that nearly 30 years ago i was taught as a small child to use “they” in single pronoun indeterminate cases yet I’ve seen so much discourse acting like this is some obscure trick and not just a built-in alternative to “he/she”

Interesting thing about English rarely discussed: there is exactly one circumstance where using an inanimate pronoun for a human is socially acceptable (and indeed mandatory), an infant or unborn child of indeterminate gender.

@patio11 @DKThomp Feels like it also fails the basic test of “if the airline no longer offered flights then what happens.” People want the points to get flights! See also “what if Google no longer offered search”. Test ain’t perfect tho. What if Heroku stopped paying its electricity bills…

@DKThomp This is a fairly common description but I don’t think it is accurate. Consider an airline with material international operations, charging single digit percentage points of flights in JPY. “It loses money on Americans; good thing it has the Japan business to keep it afloat.”

I think a fun running series would be something like: What's that business's actual "business"? EG: Airlines don't make money by flying ppl around. The profits come from credit cards. What are other industries whose profit center would surprise most people?
