My opinion or the op's? I have suffered from anxiety, depression and paranoia since late 2000, my first anxiety attack on 23rd December 2000. I honestly thought I was dying. I have hidden triggers, no idea what causes them to give me an attack, and known ones such as being around a group of strangers. The doctors tried many things, including therapy and a psychiatrist, until around 2012. Then he said they were chronic, and I have never been sent for help since.

‘social anxiety’ is a character flaw that needs to be (and can be) fixed with exposure to social interaction, not medication

My hot take as a former therapist? Most people you know with alleged mental illnesses don’t have them. Many kids with ADHD and autism diagnoses are just badly behaved and/or socialized. Many have poor attachments. Your friend with “OCD” might just be anxious and particular. Your “bipolar” mother-in-law is probably just dramatic and a bit depressed. Above all, everyone’s ex is not a narcissist. These things all exist, but they’re over-diagnosed. (Please don’t take offense if you’re one of the real ones. The false diagnoses only make your life harder.)
