When I was 9, my family moved to Beppu. A kind old man named Sugano-San sort of adopted my brothers and I.
He and his wife had us over for dinner after we moved in. At one point he asked if we had a grandpa. We said yes. He asked if he was in Japan. We said no. So he said he’d be our Japanese grandpa.
Grandpa Sugano-San was a wonderful man. I cherish his memory.

One thing I hope everyone in Japan understands; the invitations to join Americans in their BBQ cookouts are sincere. Westerners have a tradition of hospitality similar to Japan's, and it would be a delight to reciprocate the hospitality Japan has shown us.

When I first read The Princess Bride back in the late 80’s/early 90’s (can’t remember when exactly) I was fascinated to find that it was based on a longer book, spent an embarrassingly large amount of time trying to track down the original before I realized it doesn’t exist

I have spent today praying for strangers in Japan to beat cancer and congratulating students on graduating with degrees.
And it has felt so amazing!! As if it’s added happiness to my life just to make friendships in another culture. #japan

The best BBQ I’ve had on that side of the world was at Manimal in Itaewon. But I don’t doubt there is comparable or better quality in Tokyo. I never went looking while there, though, because, well, Japanese food is better than anything else in the world.
I have no idea how this will come across in translation.
