Upon rewatching Obsession, I found the film far more tragic, and it made me wonder: am I the only one who felt really torn about Wish Nikki?
Obviously, the real horror is that the real Nikki becomes a slave against her will. But another angle I don’t see discussed much is that Wish Nikki is completely incapable of being happy because she can never truly be what Bear wants: the real Nikki.
In the phone call to the representative, he says, “Just because you chose this for her doesn’t make it any less real.” So the love Wish Nikki feels is still real love, yet she can never have it reciprocated by Bear. I think that’s why she essentially goes crazy by the end of the film.
The scene after the party, where they’re arguing and she says she can’t be Nikki, is genuinely heartbreaking. 💔

Obsession does not fulfill women's urge to hate men or whatever, it's a showcase of how indecisive men will try to take what they think they want, realize they don't want it, be too afraid to do anything about it, and get other people involved while being a coward the entire time

Obsession was extremely popular because it fufills the female notion that every lonely mid guy is secretly a rapist monster and deserves to be miserable and alone. It would have been a nothing movie if the genders were swapped. Conversely if the rapist monster had been 6'3, extremely attractive, and a millionare, it would have also been a wild hit with women.

When men say they see themselves in Bear or defend Bear it should set off your flight or fight immediately because the entire movie is literally Bear being a pathetic pos rapist. Bear liked the idea of Nikki that's why he barely knew anything about her.

First watch it’s the way you could definitely relate to alot of the conflict. It’s like if somebody made a movie out of toxic experiences and cranked it to 1000
Second + watch, this girl was completely innocent and abandoned by the nigga who was so obsessed with the idea of being with her, that he completely disregarded the fact that she is a person. The scariest thing is how he can romanticize his delusion and still call it deep love while she pays the price. Whatever was good about him vanished not long after he made that wish

Watched Obsession and it is genuinely wild to me people watch this movie and feel anything but the films very loud and deep contempt for Bear.
Yes you can pick out elements and make some points, but the context built by the film is just too direct for those readings to hold up.
