Lunar Permanence will require using resources on the Moon rather than hauling them from Earth. Our in-situ resource utilization system extracts oxygen from lunar regolith to create breathable air for astronauts and propellant for refueling landers and fuel cells. It also produces iron, aluminum, silicon, construction materials, and even solar power systems. The materials for a Moon base are produced right where they’re needed, and at much lower cost than being brought from Earth.

Before its decommissioning in 2030, we intend to:     - Increase support for commercial crew PAM and cargo missions to the ISS  - Maximize research missions in low Earth orbit with commercial potential - Help industry mature technical and operational capabilities - A future where NASA becomes one of many customers for commercial stations    America will work with industry and our international partners to ignite a sustainable orbital economy. We will never surrender our presence in low Earth orbit.

Our second Blue Moon MK1 is moving through the production line at Lunar Plant 1 in Florida. The aft module and LOX/LH2 tanks are in assembly, with the aft module recently transitioning from a test fixture to a low-test stand for processing. Each lander is a step toward Lunar Permanence.

Working alongside JPL/Caltech, we've developed a Near-Earth Objects (NEO) Hunter mission concept for planetary defense using Blue Ring. NEO Hunter tests multiple asteroid-deflection techniques, including ion-beam deflection and robust direct kinetic impact, helping protect Earth from potential threats. This is another example of how commercial platforms like Blue Ring can conduct low-cost, high-priority science, exploration, and planetary defense missions.
