The WMO Hurricane Committee has retired the name Melissa because of the destruction it caused in the Caribbean in 2025. It will be replaced by Molly on the list of rotating names.

@CraigSetzer @WeatherNation One of the definitions of the word "horrid" is "extremely bad." Many, many words in the English language have multiple definitions. One finds the appropriate definition and correctly applies it to the sentence.

@CraigSetzer I know they do it on other states but the buggy fire was the first one I noticed having a nickname around here. All I remember is people informally calling them by the MM they started near. Like the MM39 fire. It will be interesting if every lightning fire gets a name!

NHC has completed its post-analysis and Tropical Cyclone Report for Hurricane #Melissa.
Melissa, one of the strongest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin, reached category 5 intensity (on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) with a minimum central pressure of 892 mb and brought catastrophic wind and storm surge impacts to portions of western Jamaica. Melissa’s slow motion also produced heavy rainfall and catastrophic flood impacts across portions of the Greater Antilles. As of the release of the report, Melissa is responsible for 95 fatalities.

From Monday, the key oil terminal of Primorsk, and the Vysotsk fuel port, stipulated non-ice-class ships had to have individual ice-breaker escorts, according to orders from the two facilities, published on the website for the administration of Russia’s Baltic ports. The Gulf of Finland, home to 40% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports, is now mostly covered with ice and the affected area continues to grow, according to Alexander Kolesov, chief weather forecaster of St. Petersburg. The icy conditions, combined with a shortage of vessels with strengthened hulls, are complicating exports of crude, fuels and other cargoes from the region, according to five people involved in the industry.
