@gomakich @ZirconiaVRChat We treat it case by case: Fans that watch fan works will still buy the authors work. Positive thing. Fan translations are positive, but should be taken down when the official translation comes out. Piracy is positive and negative but depends on who you ask.

@MagpieBotanic @ZirconiaVRChat

@alex69makoto @momiji_manjyuu Overseas people see nothing wrong with pirating a product you won't sell. This is a value difference between the West and Japan. It is codified in to our legal system as market harm. If there’s no lost sale, there’s no real harm. We are asking JP to sell to us.

@alex69makoto @momiji_manjyuu We don't have the same culture of respecting rules but we can compromise and get along. Poor and late translations lowers the value of the IP because entertainment is a social experience. Piracy is a distribution problem.

@ZirconiaVRChat Marx doesn’t directly apply here — copying ideas in literature isn’t a direct market replacement like copying a drug in biomedicine. We see the fan work as increasing the value of the IP, so no harm is done.

@ZirconiaVRChat Our literature began with shared oral stories that everyone added to. Playwrights changed their plays based on audience reactions in the theatre — and that’s how they made money. Western literature wouldn’t exist without the freedom to build on others’ ideas.

@its_bvisness It's foundational for typesetting not computer science. It allows text to be presented in proximity to the image continuing the tradition of print that has been unbroken for thousands of years.

To be clear, it is not a bad thing to have a library that makes it easy to do custom DOM-compatible text layout on the web, that's great actually but these grandiose claims of "foundational engineering" are actually ridiculous

Apparently it is "foundational UI engineering" to call the browser's `measureText` API? The library is literally just calling the canvas `measureText` API that has been there since 2009, or alternatively using a wasm build of Harfbuzz. Obviously there's some extra work to handle all the edge cases and make them line up with what the browser will eventually render, but essentially this is just exposing Harfbuzz one way or another.
Cheng Lou@_chenglou

My dear front-end developers (and anyone who’s interested in the future of interfaces): I have crawled through depths of hell to bring you, for the foreseeable years, one of the more important foundational pieces of UI engineering (if not in implementation then certainly at least in concept): Fast, accurate and comprehensive userland text measurement algorithm in pure TypeScript, usable for laying out entire web pages without CSS, bypassing DOM measurements and reflow

@MageVivika @sliceoftoma Bank's will have overseas number or messaging systems especially if you're a customer. Otherwise you can go old school and use a letter with a stamp if you feel it's worth the effort to prevent yourself from being robbed.

@sliceoftoma My ex has my card saved in some digital wallets & every so often buys something with them. It's credit card fraud but I don't really have a way to report it as I no longer live in his country so I just file a fraud charge with my bank. I've replaced my card 3 times but no change

@MageVivika @sliceoftoma Call the fraud department and tell them to revoke your ex's token authority in their digital wallet. Placing a stop on the card whenever you're not using it should act as stopgap solution.

@BrianRoemmele Fair use is decided in court so you would be open to lawsuits from unlimited parties as copyright is Lifetime + 90 years. You need Congress to grant you legal immunity like the Vaccine producers that's why you are only getting offers from China.

Maybe why I have unsolicited offers by folks in China that are frankly mind blowing (millions of dollars, house, car, full lab, full staff, “work on anything”) and here in the US I even filled out HR CVs to every top AI company and never got a response. Staying in my garage.🇺🇸🈵
Ed Sealing@EdSealing

I spent 25 years in the defense industry (with 8+ in uniform, 2+ in war zones). I have no love for the CCP, but no matter how I view China's govt, their AI research company's are doing a lot of good and deserve some credit. To anyone that thinks Deepseek is some kind of "bad actor", remember that if they kept these types of innovations secret, it's likely they would pull ahead of U.S. companies and we would lose the AI race. Companies like @deepseek_ai and @Alibaba_Qwen are actively helping advance the SOTA AI in the U.S. and around the world, and asking nothing in return. And they do so not because of overwhelming pressure gpt-oss, but because they want to share their research and models with people that run them on their private data, without worrying about it being collected by 3rd parties, used for ads, or shared. While companies like Anthropic actively try to push for more regulations, and OpenAI keeps their innovations, tests, and systems secret, these Chinese labs are pushing the industry forward while getting bashed by Western Media and NIST(?). Kudos to you. Keep bringing it.

@linear The point of Liquid glass is that it's skeumorphic. It's using the metaphor of two known materials and combines them to make a single metaphor. The user understands how both materials behave and thus can infer how it will behave. Refined is a bit harsh LOL
