It’s a beginning of a new month, and yet another day to talk about @River4fun.. @RiverdotInc is now LIVE on Base. There’s been a lot of progress this week, and I really appreciate the team’s planning and clear direction going forward. Base is gaining serious traction right now, so this move feels like a very solid step. Seeing how $RIVER reacted after dipping to the $12–13 range and bouncing back slowly, really shows how much opportunity there is in the market. emily in paris taught me more about positioning than most marketing books ever did. and i know what you're thinking, but hear me out. in season 4, episode 7, there's a 2 minute scene where the team at maison lavaux is trying to figure out how to stand out in a new category – baby fragrance. their competitors in the perfume industry? dior, bulgari, and hermès. the question on the table was simple: > how do we make maison lavaux stand out? what happened next was a masterclass from emily which most marketers would scroll past without noticing. here's what real marketers would catch in emily's strategy: ▸ the ICP was never the baby: it was the mother. the aspirational, luxury-aware mother who sees her baby as an extension of her own identity and taste. kim, kylie, cardi. those names weren't dropped randomly by emily, that was the ICP being defined in real time. ▸ the positioning wasn't "luxury baby product": it was luxury that's playful. if you notice, they didn't come down to the baby category, rather they pulled the baby category up and that's a completely different game. ▸ the blue ocean move: dior, bulgari, hermès are all serious, elegant, aspirational. this led maison lavaux to ask one question nobody else was asking: > what if babies were cool? and that white space was sitting there wide open. ▸ the category framing: they didn't enter "baby fragrance" but rather they created "luxury for the next generation." and that's a different shelf in the mind entirely. ▸ the brand story: the birkin bag scene does all the work. baby ignores the bag, grabs the perfume... mother's voice says – "what a baby really wants." simple, true, and unforgettable. but here's the thing that ties all of it together emily didn't start with the product. she started with the world the buyer already lives in and worked backwards. that's not marketing execution, but rather that's pre-growth thinking. and most brands never get there because they're too busy talking about the product before they understand the person. emily got it right in 2 minutes some teams never get there at all.
