Agreed. I think the "Just build a PC" crowd is missing most of us work a billion hrs/week and just want to plop on the couch and have a box that plays Steam games out of the box, no dealing with custom HTPCs on Windows, Sunshine/Moonlight, Bluetooth, USB cables, etc.
Sam Hulick@SamHulick

It's wild to me that people don't understand why someone would want the Steam Machine. IMO: - No Windows driver BS - Couch gaming FTW - Steam games get steeply discounted & more frequently than console games - Future integrations with Deck & Frame

@Spikes0894 @WithinRafael Dense take on your part. Most people aren’t going to play games outside of Steam with this. And the amount of games you have to “fiddle with” is small. I have over 1000 games in my library and zero I have to do anything with to play on my deck outside of remapping keys.

@WithinRafael SteamOS is not a plug and play experience no matter how much you spin it. Lot of games on SteamOS still need fiddling with to get to run well. Specific Proton versions Proton GE. Having to fiddle with other launchers and Lutris for games outside of steam. Dense take.

@bijanovich @WithinRafael You haven’t a fucking clue. Steam Deck does has the same OS as the Steam Machine and plays the same games and all I do is turn it on and bam I’m playing games. No hassle

@WithinRafael Sure the custom OS underpowered linux PC running windows games through a translation layer is going to be plug and play. This is gonna be the same hassle as a normal pc if not worse with a fraction of the features and double the price.

@DafuqsHappen @realestindaclub @itsTHR1LL @nicolbolas00 Valve is considered a small manufacturer my guy. Doesn’t matter how much money Gabe has, in terms of manufacturing they are small this can’t get the contracts bigger companies have. Get your head out of your ass.

@realestindaclub @itsTHR1LL @nicolbolas00 @TenableAcumen Even insiders (not in valve but in hardware) say, that valve got screwed over in supply lol. They just don’t have any good contacts to ask for parts. Not really the consumers fault valve can’t maintain business contacts because Gabe is busy buying more yachts. It’s a self K.O.

@DafuqsHappen @nicolbolas00 @TenableAcumen its not the chipset driving the costs up it’s the fact that DDR5 and SSD’s are shooting up in price rapidly with no end because sam altman thought he could cause a “job apocalypse”

@itsTHR1LL How much do you think the PSU in the Steam Machine costs? How about basically every single low end OEM computer?

@Tha5ThHorsemon I'm buying one and I have $3k gaming PC as does my wife. We both have Steam Decks. Between our Steam libraries we have over 1000 games. What we don't have is anything to sit on the couch and game on while we hang out. Steam Machine fills that niche. Price is reasonable for it.

I love Steam, but $1,349 is getting into “build a really nice gaming PC” territory. The Steam Machine has to offer something special beyond convenience. Am I missing something here?

@trentreed27 @UnkWerks I am. I have a 3k gaming PC that i built, but im still getting a Steam Machine ( and I have a Steam Deck w/ Dock) because i can't drag my rig to the living room and play a couch game while hanging out with my wife. Thats what the Steam Machine is for. My PC is for everything else

@UnkWerks You have a good point but the people building a PC like that would not consider the steam machine at any price.

@Fur7010 @SteamMachineYet @HardwareSteam I like the cope that the XBox Helix is gonna be 2x the power of the Steam Machine at the same price point console people keep yelling. Cool cool. Except the CEO of Microsoft & CEO of Xbox said they aren't subsidizing the cost of consoles anymore. Enjoy your $1400 Xbox

Thoughts on Steam Machine after price reveal? Are you still going to buy it, not going to anymore, or were you never going to?

@thaonlyjonathan @HardwareSteam Alienware hast been a premium PC in over decade...its a Dell with dell components and the Alienware name. You'd have been fractionally better suggesting a CyberpowerPC. The fact you suggested one shows how little you know.

@HardwareSteam You can build a comparable PC for less, you can buy an Alienware laptop for less, and the PS5 Pro is $150 less and has more storage and better graphics/performance (plus it actually includes a controller whereas Steam Machine doesn't). Tell me why again we need this.

@Wario64 I wouldn't buy an Acer. It an unbranded oem GPU & uses mid-tier unbranded generic SSD, RAM, & proprietary motherboard & power supply. Acer has a history of cutting corners on parts & materials as well as their customer support and warranty being ass. Price vs quality.

The Steam Machine is showing disappointing performance in demanding games: 🛑 Cyberpunk 2077 (1440p, Medium, RT) – 28 FPS 🛑 Black Myth: Wukong (1440p, Very High) – 20 FPS 🛑 Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (Ultra) – 21 FPS 🔹 Key takeaway: the Steam Machine’s performance does not match its price, a regular PC costing $1,049 or more would deliver significantly better results. #Steam

Shout out to Gamers Nexus for showing the DIY build of a comparable machine (slightly better performance than Steam Machine) $979 vs $1050. Buy an xbox controller on sale for $50 vs $99 for Steam controller... You save about $120.
