AMERICAN PSYCHO [2000] Directed by Mary Harron DP: Andrzej Sekula What's your opinion of this one? I very rarely see it posted, or mentioned in comments. I think it's excellent, and now that it's twenty six years old, I feel justified calling it a modern classic.

@mikemoviez In the novel, the author makes readers suffer for hundreds of pages—and I mean that in a negative sense. The filmmakers have succeeded in turning Bret Easton Ellis’s oppressive, bleak realism into an entertaining satire.

@FastbreakHoops5 This dude is going to get more views than the Oscars, and deservedly so, he provided entertainment.

@TicoRomao2 A clever story that really challenged me as a viewer: we consistently see the world only through Gittes’ perspective, and Gittes never fully grasps the whole plan. The fact that you have to actively piece together the “loose ends” yourself isn’t a plot hole—it’s the film’s intent

This week in film teaching, I covered 1970s neo-noir in demythologization mode and focused on Chinatown (1974). J.J. Gittes often makes erroneous inferences and overlooks key clues, with the film’s restricted narration prompting the viewer to make the same errors.

How does burning love go from red-hot passion to, say, murder-suicide? Has Roman Polanski got your ticket in Bitter Moon (out today, 1992)! Polanski’s version of The Love Boat is a love story for nihilists; its operatic tragic ending is a Valentine’s Day card tipped with poison.

Simon & Garfunkel never placed much emphasis on their roots—their music is more universal in nature than religious.

Guy Pearce says he thinks his performance in ‘MEMENTO’ is sh*t. “While it was playing I realized I hate what I did. I know why I didn’t work with Christopher Nolan again. It’s because I’m no good in Memento.”

Is Christopher Nolan’s Memento (out today, 2001) a brilliant exercise -or gimmick? Amnesiac Guy Pearce’s search for his wife has a non-linear structure that can be simultaneously fascinating and frustrating; in the end, is it just a fancy schmancy way of telling a simple story?

All I have to say about the Oscars is, I am thrilled PTA has been recognized for director, for his adapted screenplay, and for Best Picture. I think it's a travesty that Michael Bauman didn't get it for cinematography, but Academy choices are often strange, biased, and fickle.

@mikemoviez At an Oscar ceremony, I’d expect to see experts who have a sense for the future and know what kinds of material will be in demand. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. These people are stuck in the past. It takes them decades to discover talents like PTA. Pathetic.

ALIEN [1979] Directed by Ridley Scott ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I saw this for the first time when I was 11, and this scene legitimately fucked me up for a while. The only clip I could find ends at a convenient moment 😅 If you want to see it all you gotta watch the movie!
