My good friend invited me to share my story with some aspiring fund managers yesterday. Combination of PE, credit, lending, and real estate at a small conference. Nice group of people, big ambitions. Couple takeaways: 1) Lots of them overcomplicate raising capital. There’s no pitch. Just build a track record incrementally, hit your numbers, demonstrate mastery of your niche. Capital will find you. There is no rush. 2) Too many want to go too big, too quickly. Some of these guys want their first fund to be $50 million. That’s just not where the focus should be. Focus on doing one small fund, hit your numbers, and then do another one. Long game only. 3) Most of the guys I talked to said they would be afraid to raise capital from their warm market friends and family - which is obviously the easiest capital to raise pulling the trust card. My response to that is always this: If you aren’t confident enough in your model and niche to raise money from friends and family, you’re not ready to raise capital from anybody yet. If you’re convicted and mastered in your niche, you should be thrilled to generate returns for those closest to you - and confident enough to ask for a shot.

Bank stocks soar as trading desks deliver record-breaking quarter. Wall Street’s largest banks kicked off the year with a surge in trading activity, delivering a record-setting performance that underscores the strength of market volatility and client demand. Combined trading revenue across the six biggest U.S. banks reached roughly $45B in the first quarter, marking a 17% increase from the same period a year ago. The gains were driven by robust performance across fixed income, currencies, commodities, and equities desks, as shifting rate expectations and active institutional positioning fueled volumes. This momentum comes as banks continue to benefit from a more dynamic macro environment compared to the subdued conditions seen in prior years. Investors have responded enthusiastically. Bank stocks have posted significant advances over the past 12 months, with Citigroup $C leading the group at a 110% gain. Goldman Sachs $GS and Morgan Stanley $MS followed with increases of 81% and 78%, respectively, while Bank of America $BAC rose 46%. JPMorgan Chase $JPM and Wells Fargo $WGC also delivered solid returns, climbing 34% and 27%. The strong results reinforce trading as a key earnings engine for large banks in today’s market landscape.

Then, I was lucky enough to host a panel with @ChaseLochmiller, Libby Wayman, and Jeremy Kepner, on building the backbone of AI: energy, compute, and the future of infrastructure. Planning the buildout of the infrastructure we don’t always see is, of course, essential for building at the scale and pace we want to.
