A Senator praises the “spirit of American entrepreneurs” in one breath. Days later, they back a bill that would make it nearly impossible for new founders to compete. This isn’t an accident. It’s a pattern. Policymakers say they love builders. Their rules say the opposite. Why the disconnect? ⬇️

"Data centers are draining our water" is the new "plastic straws are destroying the ocean." It's a hoax, and many people pushing it know it's not true. At AFPI (@A1policy) we wrote a piece breaking down the numbers: 1) Data centers use very little water > Somewhere between 0.2% and 0.5% of U.S. freshwater consumption > 15x less water than we lose each year to leaky pipes > The biggest data center of 2024 uses less water than 3 square miles of farmland (America has 1.3 million) 2) Local water impacts are small, too > In one of the country’s most “water stressed” counties, data centers are 0.12% of its water use (golf courses are 3.8%) 3) This hasn’t stopped lawmakers from fearmongering about data centers > 5 senators, including Bernie Sanders and Ed Markey, wrote a letter to the admin complaining about data center water use > Lawmakers have introduced legislation and called for data center moratoriums because of fake water use claims. Denver might enact one soon 4) Data centers are one of America’s greatest strengths > Huge local tax revenues > The AI data center boom has created tremendous economic growth > Wages in construction and the trades have skyrocketed (construction up >30% because of data centers) We end by suggesting some ways to accelerate the data center buildout, while protecting local communities' interests. Legislating is like big wave surfing. You spend years building a team, practicing, and making sure you have the right equipment, waiting for the weather and the swells to be just right. Then when the wave arrives, you don’t miss your opportunity. Sometimes it only comes once in a generation. We’re in that big wave moment for crypto. We can’t miss our window to get the CLARITY Act done. You never know when you’ll have another chance to ride.

As America cements its position as the crypto capital of the world, clear rules of the road for software developers are critical. Today’s staff no-action letter delivers long overdue clarity for non-custodial digital wallet software providers.

Dangerous storm outbreak could slam D.C. area Monday; tornadoes possible An intense storm system could bring widespread and severe thunderstorms to the D.C. region on Monday, capable of producing violent wind gusts, hail and tornadoes in addition to torrential rain and lightning. The National Weather Service has declared a rare Level 4 out of 5, or “moderate,” storm risk, meaning severe storms that are expected to be widespread. This is the first instance of this risk level in more than two years. The storms’ timing still needs to be pinned down, but they are most probable between about 1 and 7 p.m. Monday, when an organized and violent squall line is expected to pass. That said, widely scattered showers and storms, some of which could be intense, are possible before this window, as early as 9 or 10 a.m. Rain is expected to linger after the most intense storms pass in the evening. The fast-moving storms along the squall line and possible hurricane-force wind gusts could topple trees and power lines, leading to outages. Expect travel disruptions and flight delays and avoid driving when the worst storms are passing. (1/3)

The red dots show Chinese fishing vessels swarming Peru’s EEZ in 2024 525 Chinese boats in Peruvian waters, while Peru itself barely had 239 China’s greedy pirates emptied their own seas and are now hijacking the livelihoods of other nations’ fishermen.

China's distant water fleet is decimating sea life around the world. Look at how the fleets concentrate around Africa and South America. They target smaller countries without the resources to confront the state sponsored ships. This is an economic and environmental disaster.

A passenger flying in a Peruvian passenger aircraft took this chilling video showing scores of Chinese fishing vessels operating illegally inside Peru's water. The Chinese Distant Water Fishing Fleet operating illegally inside the waters of Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile and other South American nations are so big that they can be seen even from the space. China's global fishing offense is ruining our planet.

DC City Council is delaying Waymo in the city because they want a safety report that the District Department of Transportation was supposed to provide by *2022*. Waymo reduces serious crashes by 80-90%. This charade is stalling life-saving technology for no good reason.

Understand this: Waymo in DC is not being delayed because the City Council wants a study. Instead, the City Council is asking for a study because they want to delay Waymo in DC.

I was in the meeting. The most senior Biden Admin staff were there. Everything Marc said is accurate. The YC comment is misleading because: A) Some of the Biden AI executive order directives were not completed after the President dropped out B) more importantly, much of the discussion was about what the Admin planned to do later in 2024 and in a second Biden term (this meeting happened before he dropped out).
The Bulwark@BulwarkOnline

"Under Joe Biden, the share of Y Combinator companies that were AI companies rose from something like 20% to 90%. So this idea the Biden admin. wasn't going to allow AI startups to exist certainly runs in the face of the evidence." @DKThomp challenges Marc Andreessen's claim.

President @realDonaldTrump is right: the U.S. needs clear rules for digital asset markets. The CLARITY Act helps ensure entrepreneurs build the next gen of financial tech here at home. I look forward to working with @ChairmanSelig to help implement CLARITY in the near future.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman
Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking at the @a16z American Dynamism Summit with the builders, operators, and investors helping shape the next era of exploration. NASA has a clear mandate under President Trump’s national space policy: Return American astronauts to the Moon by the end of 2028, build an enduring presence there, and ensure American leadership in the most important strategic domain. Achieving that requires focus and disciplined execution. In the weeks ahead, the Artemis II crew will travel around the Moon. It is the next step toward returning humans to the lunar surface and building a lasting presence there. To reach that goal, we’ve recently made some changes to the Artemis program: Increasing launch cadence, standardizing hardware, and adding missions that allow us to test systems, reduce risk, and build confidence before landing. This is the same approach that carried the United States from Mercury to Gemini to Apollo. In the 1960s we launched often, learned from every mission, and improved with each step forward. That is how you build real capability in deep space. Yesterday, I also announced NASA Force, a new initiative with @USOPM to bring exceptional engineering and technical talent into NASA and help rebuild the core competencies that make missions like this possible. We want to open the search far and wide to attract the best of the best and incentivize them to leverage their skills to maintain American superiority in space. NASA changed the world in 1969 by concentrating the nation’s best talent on the hardest problems imaginable. We are doing it again.

Under Secretary of State Sarah B. Rogers
True words below, h/t @tylercowen
a16z@a16z

.@UnderSecPD Sarah B. Rogers: AI with a "Western soul" is the greatest soft power tool America can possess. "Tyler Cowen has this great phrase — he talks about AI with a Western soul." "AI that reasons in an individualistic way, a rules-based way, that prioritizes user consent — those are all Western principles." "And that is going to be the underlying reasoning model on which so much of the world's communication and commerce runs." "The proliferation of a Western AI stack is really a top priority for our entire administration. It should be a top priority for anyone who cares about freedom."
