@Papa1313131313 @atKenNelson @GlowSurfing Worked in one for a few months in HS in rural IA, so really no minorities, but still saw some stuff all the same. My favorite was using food stamps to buy food, but then magically having cash/check to buy the cases of beer and cartons of cigs.

@RiddledRobots @Not_the_Bee Rethinking it and there is one *slightly* adult joke, when the main character is cycling through computer-generated voice options. One is of a woman who sounds like she is in ... let's say a state of arousal. But pretty brief; 8YO likely wouldn't even get it.

@RiddledRobots @Not_the_Bee That may be just a bit too young to appreciate some of the more emotionally complex elements of the story. But there's essentially no bad language, no inappropriate sex scenes, no graphic violence, or anything like that, so it's completely appropriate in that sense.

This was a good movie. Not a perfect movie by any means and a little long, but a good story without a bunch of lecturing the audience. Rocky the alien is of course the highlight. Take your kids too, they’ll enjoy it.

@ingelramdecoucy @overtintrospect Best description I saw of him was the guy in a post-apocalyptic movie that is friendly and nice and invites people into his house for respite. Then about five minutes after they're inside, those characters realize that he kills and eats people.

I don’t live in Texas so this is just the perspective of an outside observer, but something about James Talarico freaks me out. He had soulless, dead eyes and the way he talks, not the words he says but HOW he talks, gives me the heebie jeebies… like a weird uncanny valley thing
Latinx Adjacent Doctor PhD@TonerousHyus

Talarico is like Walz. He codes as “moderate” and masculine the way upper class white women feel most comfortable with masculinity. Which is being completely weak, feckless, and talking about how “Jesus heckin loves migrants and abortion” It’s just poison for real people

@iowahawkblog "Almost the entire state is laid out in 1-square mile grids divided by roads." And oddly enough, it's one of the things I miss most about living there. Almost impossible to get lost or have to go too far out of your way for a detour.

I give you the near-grid county map of Iowa (1). Almost the entire state is laid out in 1-square mile grids divided by roads. Case in point (2), a two-by-two mile area centered around my boyhood home. Note the divisions; the green square is exactly 160 acres. Easy to divide.

Because the USA is denominated in miles. There are 640 acres in a square mile. 640 can be divided by 2 easily. A square half mile is 160 acres, a square 1/4 mile is 40 acres, a square 1/8 mile is 10 acres. Nobody in America knows what a kilometer is, let alone a hectare
Simon Kuestenmacher@simongerman600

Not coming from an agricultural background, some measurements don’t make intuitive sense to me. A Hectares are easy enough to come to terms with: 10,000 square meters. Easy. An acre?! I still can’t wrap my head around this…

@megbasham I honestly wouldn't even know how to be grammatically incorrect. Do you deliberately misconjugate verbs or something? Like, I know how to speak English. Or is it just horrible spelling?

Last night, after she’d gone to bed, my 16 y/o daughter receives a text from a friend. (We keep electronics in our room at night). I know my daughter isn’t gonna see it for a while and I know the answer to the girl’s dance-class-related question. So I just pick up the phone and answer it really quick as if I’m my daughter and leave it at that. Tonight, I see her giggling over her phone. I ask what’s up. Apparently, the other girl’s mother had just wanted to get an answer to the question really quick, so she picked up HER daughter’s phone and texted mine as if she were her daughter. (basically both of us were too lazy to go through the rigmarole of explaining, “hi, this is Mrs. So-and-so, and here’s why I’m texting you on your friend’s phone…” But the funny part was how the two girls figured this out. Because the first one was so appalled at seeing her mother‘s perfectly punctuated and capitalized sentences, that she felt she needed to come clean that it was her mom lest my daughter think she is that conscientious. And my daughter, likewise, didn’t want her friend to think that SHE uses correct grammar when texting either. So what I learned today is that it is apparently humiliating to be caught correctly formulating sentences via text.

@dank1j @christopherrufo It's Dem logic. They think that if a guy puts on a dress and makeup, he magically becomes a woman. Ergo, just put on the hard hat and high-viz vest, and voila! Qualified constructiony engineer-type project manager person!

@ITM369832248681 @iowahawkblog Similar to my take: Looks like this is from an Ant-Man movie when a toy gets hit with an errant Pym Particle enlarging disc. But, if I'm recalling correctly, this thing is supposed to be highly customizable, so while this one might not do much for me, could build one that would.

@ProfessorSenko @603greg @nettermike I'm guessing it's fully remote but also somehow comes with a city-provided vehicle, the salary starts north of $500K with a bonus for hitting targets on the number of seized businesses, and there's a minimum 8 weeks of vacation ... I withdraw my /sarc, posthaste!

Seattle’s socialist Mayor Katie Wilson has officially declared war on grocery chains. She claims she will unilaterally BAN grocery stores from closing down in her city, arguing that food access is a human right that overrides business decisions. She said : "We cannot allow big grocery chains to close stores at will!" The Plan: If a private business tries to leave due to theft, taxes, or safety concerns... the government will step in. Her allies in the state legislature have even introduced a bill (HB-2313) allowing the city to use Eminent Domain to SEIZE grocery store properties and turn them into government-run shops. Mayor Katie Wilson calls it "protecting the community." Critics call it "holding businesses hostage." Thoughts?

@603greg @nettermike What do you mean? Food just comes from the back of the grocery store. I've seen it. When they're running out of something, the workers just go in the back to get more and restock the shelf. (/sarc, just in case you can't tell)

@Vennyneckveins @InternetH0F The waitress blowing the bubbles in Harry's soda and Sea Bass asking Harry if he still wants the burger is from the unrated version (also shows the loogie landing in the burger, which isn't shown here). Then they trimmed bits and pieces out to make the clip about a minute long.

@InternetH0F This has to be a different take than what's actually in the movie. The dialogue is slightly off and the bubbles thing isn't even in the movie. Source: trust me bro, I've seen this movie hundreds of times.
