@Slm1110_ @runningman12001 @JasonFitz1 The very fact that slowing down even a little allows you to run 23 more miles suggests just how grueling a 5k is. You're a different type of human if you are in pain throughout the first ten miles of a marathon, but can hold that pace for 16 more.

@eflorida @runningman12001 @JasonFitz1 Erik’s stance is correct in my opinion - a 5K is often pain from the minute the gun goes, a marathon (if paced properly) should essentially be a long tempo until the final six miles or so, at which point, yes, you’d expect it to hurt.

@runningman12001 @eflorida The suffering seems similar IMO. It's just condensed into a more intense, shorter window in the mid distances. Marathon suffering isn't as intense, but it's a global sensation of the body shutting down (rather than bathing in fire like the 3k/5k). Remind me why we do this? 😆

@runningman12001 @JasonFitz1 Well it doesn't seem like any race would be a walk in the park if you push yourself. I guess my comparison is between being so close to the edge in a 5k, where in a marathon you can't be that close to the edge most of the race or you fail.

@eflorida @JasonFitz1 You're not giving enough effort in the marathon then. My best marathon is 2:53 & best 5K is 17:50. Shorter race is a walk in the park if the paces are similar.
