There is no reason that the business models imposed on us by centralized platforms (think Amazon, Google and Facebook) can't be inverted, decentralized, and put to service for all of us. economist.com/open-future/20…

Yesterday a friend of mine took me to visit an Old Order Mennonite one-room school in Blair County, PA. The Mennonite community does not accept govt funding, choosing instead to remain independent and preserve their way of life. A few years ago, after becoming dissatisfied with both public and Catholic school options, my friend considered this school for his daughter. As part of the admissions process, the school conducted a home visit. They wanted to understand the family’s values—specifically whether they attended church and whether there was a television in the home. After receiving satisfactory answers (yes to church, no to TV), his daughter was accepted. She spent three years at the Mennonite school and is now a strong, conservative young woman attending an elite liberal arts college. My friend credits the Mennonite community with giving her a solid moral foundation. In the video, the teacher describes what a typical day in her classroom looks like.

@MorbiusMind @XVanFleet Liberal arts doesn't mean (or even imply) the kind of liberalism you are so afraid of. Indoctrination?? (one of the responses) No, a good liberal arts education emphasizes critical thinking.

@newstart_2024 Mongamy has a narrow definition. You have to wear special blinders to not look beyond that, to other cultural factors before pronouncing your verdict.

Our species norm is polygyny: 80% of cultures historically let high-status men hoard wives while low-status men get nothing. Christianity (inherited from Rome) forced monogamy for 2000 years. Now we've mostly ditched it—and we're sliding back toward the old pattern. Louise Perry: Lifting the monogamous restriction produces worse outcomes—higher crime, domestic violence, economic inequality. Monogamy is better for women and low-status men. Monogamy isn't "natural"—it's an engineered cultural upgrade that tamed inequality and violence. Do you think monogamy is worth defending even if it's not the "default" human pattern? Or are we better off returning to the species norm? Your take 👇

🚨 BREAKING: Asked Rep. Ted Lieu point-blank: If illegals aren’t voting, why are Dems so scared of ICE at polling places? His response: “People with guns around a polling place would be intimidating to lots of Americans.” Ted Lieu is dumb AF.

@TheRabbitHole Until is doesn't. For an example, when the rentier class has all the marbles, and when you have captured enough market power that you can pursue a path of enshittification.

@troy_mcartor @cafreiman Most likely, that will mean doing business with retailers who operate differently. Push this too far, and you'll see a resurgence of consumer co-ops.

Surge pricing is good—if a store is running low on ice cream (for example), it can conserve the supply by instantly raising the price and reserve the remainder for those who value it the most (plus, the store can quickly lower prices if a product isn’t selling).

Walmart is rolling out digital price tags at all of its stores. At the same time, the corporate giant just secured a patent for "dynamically and automatically updating item prices.” Plus another patent for using machine learning to predict demand and recommend prices.

I am not entirely against solar power. It can be useful, but it only makes sense to install it on roofs in sunnier climates or to shade parking lots. There is absolutely zero reason to knock down tens of thousands of acres of trees to put up a solar farm that would produce only a fraction of the energy that an existing natural gas or new nuclear power plant could occupying only a few hundred acres.

@KeithKopinski @Noahpinion @racheljanfaza Right /s. Just what we need. More people who can't govern themselves putting up a false front against authoritarianism that amounts to little more than dissolute lifestyles as an alternative. This wasn't all hippies, but it was the story for too many. We should learn from that.

@Noahpinion @racheljanfaza Didn't hippies feel like this and instead of being weirdos, learned to make great music, have fun and make love, travel around to figure it out? We need more anti authority adventures maybe. Cast off the iWatch, find your inner Jack London and Kerouac. Forge a new way.

@Noahpinion @CoreyWriting Obama destroyed race relations in this country; he was hardly a great President domestically.

I love Barack Obama. On domestic issues he was a great President. Plus he got Bin Laden. But I'm forced to admit that on foreign policy, he was terrible -- he ignored Russia's first invasion of Ukraine, didn't address growing Chinese power, and trusted Iran's leaders.

@ScottJenningsKY This is regime change, pure and simple. This isn't what we were promised before he took office. It's the tail (Israel) wagging the dog.
