@lestweforget_tr I'm afraid I don't have a ton of details about his time in Holland, though I know he served there and went to a verterans reunion there back in the 1980's. My Dad passed away over 30 years ago, and like many vets, didn't talk much about the war and his service.

As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day, forever grateful & proud that my Dad, Jack was a member of the Fort Garry Horse tank regiment that landed at Normandy. So few of these brave veterans are still with us. But we will always be thankful for their service. I miss you Dad.

@JDCartography I agree: they were larger than life men and women. They withstood much to preserve our way of life. I thank them and your grandfather. We are here because they were there, doing the dirty work that needed to be done.

My father enlisted with the Halifax Rifles and in the spring of 1943 went to Italy to serve with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. He was there for the Liberation of Holland, then remained to escort German prisoners back to Germany. He came home in 1948. #RemembranceDay #Canada

@RayHeard My uncle took part at Juno Beach. My father was part of Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. His unit began in Italy, then Belgium and eventually Holland. I'm not sure where they were during D day.

On this day in 1944, when I was 8, we got the news that the Allies had landed in France. At last, good news! On that Longest Day, the Canadians, who landed at Juno Beach, penetrated deeper into Nazi occupied France than our US or UK allies.

@FR1908___ Definitely. He encountered difficulties upon returning and it fits what we now know as PTSD. He suffered nightmares his whole life sadly. We have some photos along with his uniform badges and medals. He received the standard issue.

This is my grandad, Pvt Peter (Larry) Jansen who served with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, Perth Regiment. He first tried to enlist when he was 17yrs old. His third attempt was succesful and he became a messenger. #LestWeForget #RemembranceDay

@1darkblonde That is unfortunate! On the other hand, understandable since they have experienced terrible things at a such young age. After the war, they wanted to quickly forget that and get on with their lives. Do you still have some items from his wartime?

@FR1908___ Unfortunately, we don't know. He refused to say one word about it upon his return.

My grandfather, Edward A. Humphrey, served in WW2 in the liberation of Holland. On Shrove Tuesday, his buddies said - Come on Ed! They're serving pancakes in the mess. So he went and it saved his life as the tent was hit. #RemembranceDay2020

My Uncle Archie, died in 2010 at 93 year of age, still hosting the shrapnel he received during the liberation of Holland.
