Meeting the Divine in Nature — A reflection for Earth Day on birdwatching, deep ecology and panentheism, with a Merton quote

@SawyerMerritt My first thought as well. Cook has been an operations genius, and has grown the company insanely, but the vision stuff has been hit and miss. From what I’ve seen of Ternus, I’m excited.
I hope Apple takes more risks under John Ternus' tenure as CEO.
No-one can deny that Tim was an incredible operations guy. Apple stock went up ~2,000% during his 15 years as CEO, but John being an actual engineer I think is what Apple needs at this stage. The company has a lot of catching up to do on the AI front, and they need more innovative hardware products, so hopefully John will bring that.
As a kid, Apple was the first company I fell in love with. The products blew me away. There was this feeling of magic at the company. But things have felt more stagnant in the last 5 years or so. This is not to say they haven't released some great products recently, because they absolutely have, but they need to be more innovative and become more nimble. Embodied AI will become a huge part of our lives in the not too distant future. That's an area that Apple should dive into (among others).
Excited to see what John does as CEO.
@thedude11253@ayanman22@whignewtons Defensive much? Oh, they’re college educated, so they can’t possibly make politically-biased assumptions about someone else’s motivations and accept a headline that confirms their biases.
And we wonder why the public doesn’t understand the Court very well? 🙄 …
how about:
“Supreme Court unanimously holds that states can’t sue companies in state court for fulfilling WWII contracts with federal government.”
Not as sexy but I guess that’s the point!
Hail got 10x heavier and twice as big a few minutes ago before subsiding. Note thunder at beginning. I missed the flash. Hail in Seattle - Madison Valley @KSeattleWeather
@southern_man76@SawyerMerritt Read the piece. It’s 2 issues. On the crime, he made full restitution to the victims. I wish he’d been prosecuted but he didn’t get off free; he did a diversion program and avoided a felony charge. Second issue, I’m not sure he should lose his job as dumb as his behavior was.
NEWS: A Minnesota state employee received just a one-day unpaid suspension from his job after he vandalized six Tesla vehicles and caused $20,000 in damage last year.
He was spared prosecution in favor of a diversion program: “Your behavior, as substantiated by the investigation, constitutes a violation of DHS’ and [the Minnesota Management and Budget’s] policies,” read the disciplinary letter sent to Adams. The letter to Adams noted that state policy required he be “held to the highest standard of honesty, integrity, and ethical trust.”

Anyone who is a lower level white collar worker or knows any knows these aren’t extreme atypical examples. Ordering $20+ delivery lunch instead of bringing $4 lunch from home is common. Years ago, I walked a friend who couldn’t make ends meet through realizing they were spending $50/day ($1000/mo) on food between takeout breakfast ($10) and lunch ($15+) and readymade dinner ($20+), and things have only gotten more expensive.
@mattyglesias How big a part of the affordability crisis is this really? Or did someone just find a few extreme atypical examples and grow it into a story on a slow news day?
@SawyerMerritt Note there’s no option for insurance — just as with test drives. You have to already have your own, so you already have a car. So it’s really more of an extended test drive you pay for. Still great but not a rental replacement.
NEWS: Tesla has introduced a new car rental program at select U.S. stores.
You can rent a Tesla for up to 7 days starting at $60/day. It includes FSD (Supervised) and free Supercharging for the entire rental. If you order a new Tesla within 7 days of your rental, you’ll get a $250 discount on your purchase.
@SawyerMerritt Honestly this is the sort of thing I’ve long wanted when traveling - fly into a location and pickup a Tesla with FSD, mileage and supercharging included. Doesn’t even have to be the latest models, but any Tesla with FSD is going to be better than ICE rentals.
@emzanotti@KellieCeline@grizzlymamabear People! Stop having firm opinions about things you know nothing about! The black parts are wood tubes that rotate around horizontal bars so as you move the tong width, your grip on these tubes stays solid. The coated metal in the shape of the jar top is for ... the jar top.
@KellieCeline@grizzlymamabear What is wrong with you guys? It’s literally the Ball canning tongs and they’re upside down. The green part is contoured for the jars
@ElectionCenter_ Can we stop with the absurd idea that the socialist left is the “dem base” who you don’t want to piss off. Nothing against either Platner or Mills. But this premise is used all the time and it’s ridiculous.
Bernie doing a large rally for Graham Platner right now. I don’t see a way for Schumer to try and Push Janet Mills or any other candidate now without pissing odd the dem base. If he was smart he’d start clearing the way for Platner or at the very least stay out of the primary.
