According to the latest NCRB Crime in India 2023 report (total cognizable crimes, IPC + SLL): Uttar Pradesh: 793,020 cases (absolute), crime rate 335.3 per lakh population. West Bengal: 180,272 cases (absolute), crime rate 181.6 per lakh population. UP has far higher absolute numbers (due to larger population) and a higher rate than WB. National average rate: 448.3 per lakh.
