I launched a niche consumer app and the biggest lesson so far is that “boring” problems can be powerful if they are tied to real money/time mistakes.
SoilIQ helps homeowners/gardeners make timing decisions based on soil conditions instead of guessing by air temperature or the calendar.
At first, it was mostly a data tool.
Then user feedback made it obvious that the real product was not the data. It was the recommendation.
People do not wake up wanting “soil temperature data.”
They want to know:
- Can I seed today?
- Should I water?
- Is frost a risk?
- Should I mow?
- Should I wait?
That changed how I think about the product.
The next version is focused on:
- turning data into decisions
- logging what users did
- making future guidance more personal
- creating shareable summaries
- building creator/community distribution
The surprising part is that creators in the niche have been more helpful than generic beta testers. One creator gave very specific feedback that immediately changed the roadmap.
Still early, but the biggest challenge now is retention. The app is useful when a decision needs to be made, but I need to make it valuable enough that users check it regularly.
