The quickest way to kill a side business in its first 6 months is to tell people about it. The friends, the colleagues, the family at Christmas — every announcement costs you a small piece of the energy you needed for the actual work. The brain registers the social approval of telling somebody about a project as a partial reward, identical to the chemical hit of finishing the thing. You leave the dinner table feeling like a man with a serious plan, while the actual plan has been quietly drained of urgency. The quietest men in your year group are still in their twenties when they start, and still in their early thirties when the first version of the thing finally works. They didn't post about it on Instagram, update their LinkedIn, or make it the dinner conversation. They just worked on it for 2-3 years until it was real. Tell three people, maximum: your partner, one mentor, and one peer doing something similar. Everyone else finds out when the thing has been working for a while, not before.

Been away from the screens for 2/3 weeks and missed all the market noise and it’s been oddly grounding. Stepping back reminds you that most of the day to day movement is just noise. When you’re investing for the long term, (which most of us are) you don’t need to be constantly watching to make progress. A nice reminder that doing less is actually doing better. Think years, decades. Not days.

Uber at it again with an over 40% deduction from a job I did. Customer paid £47.96 I got paid £27.72 People sometimes get in my car and complain about the price. Insinuating that the driver decides what the passenger has to pay. I always say that Uber are ripping us both off. I understand Uber will always take a cut but surely this is to much? This was a 30 minute trip. What do you think? Fair or not?
