Compelling insights from @HelenClarkNZ on global political headwinds, security, and on what vaccine efficacy and anti-science sentiments teach us as we confront #AMR. The message was clear: leadership at all levels and broad coalitions are vital for the path forward.

Delighted to see that out paper "Mucosal IL-36 is a defining feature of severe paediatric bronchiolitis" is now out in Mucosal Immunology. A quite unexpected finding, which might lead to new treatment approaches. Congrats to the team! mucosalimmunology.org/article/S1933-…

Such a great conversation with @EricTopol Topol about vagus nerve stimulation ranging from the early experiments that seemed like science fiction to today’s FDA-approved device for RA. We covered mechanism, clinical data, and future trials. youtu.be/CU31kjTMaKk?si…

Is running GPT-5 profitable? * Gemini is doing 10^15 tokens per month * Suppose OpenAI is 2x, that's ~0.8 billion per second * B200 chip can prob output over 3000 tokens/sec * So you need 310k B200s (at 80% util) * At $2.5/hour, that's $560m/month * Add 50% for staff etc, $840m/month * OpenAI's revenue is $1.6bn/month There's uncertainty, but it lines up with other estimates I've seen – running frontier models seems highly profitable. OpenAI is only loss making because 70% of the compute is invested in developing GPT-6. The key question is whether those investments will pay off.

Science is a tough career. We are so over-trained in scepticism we end up doubting ourself. The worst part can be thinking you are alone in your self-doubt. By sharing our common experiences, we hope our new book helps those going through a career crisis: cam.ac.uk/stories/cambri…

In 2011, scientists at @broadinstitute discovered a rare gene variant that protects against Crohn's disease. Now, the team, led by @TheXavierLab, has developed molecules mimicking the protective variant's effects. The compounds could eventally treat IBD. broadinstitute.org/news/scientist…

BIG BREAKTHOUGH: A new AI tool could dramatically speed up the discovery of life saving medicines. Researchers at Tsinghua University created a new system called DrugCLIP, that can screen drug molecules against human proteins at a speed that makes traditional methods look ancient. > DrugCLIP uses deep contrastive learning to turn both molecules and protein binding pockets into vectors and match them almost instantly. > It screened 500 million molecules across 10,000 human proteins, covering half of the entire human druggable proteome. > The system completed 10 trillion molecule protein evaluations in a single day, roughly 10 million times faster than classic docking simulations. > They used AlphaFold2 to generate protein structures and then refined binding pockets with a custom tool called GenPack. > The model even identified compounds for TRIP12, a protein linked to cancer and autism that has resisted traditional drug-targeting approaches. All data and models are open access, so labs worldwide can now speed up early stage drug discovery.

Consensus statement on vitamin D role in metabolic health☆ ☀️Highlights ▶️Preclinical studies show that Vit D plays a key role in muscle regeneration & immune modulation. ▶️Data on Vit D suppl on muscle performance & fall prevention in older adults aren't conclusive. ▶️There is a curvilinear relationship between ↘️ vitamin 25(OH)D concentrations & ↗️ risk of CVDs. ▶️Studies suggest that Vit D supplementation may reduce adverse left ventricular remodeling & lower the incidence of atrial fibrillation. ▶️There are clear inverse correlations between Vit D status & insulin resistance, the risk of diabetes, & chronic diabetic complications. ▶️Vit D suppl reduces the progression to diabetes in adults w/prediabetes. ▶️Obesity is inversely related to Vit D status, w/higher adiposity linked to lower Vit D. ▶️Future studies, also based on national & international registries, on the effect of Vit D suppl on cardiometabolic outcomes using individualized approaches are needed. ☀️In conclusion: While Vit D demonstrates considerable promise in modifying a wide array of metabolic health concerns, rigorous scientific inquiry is essential to deepen our understanding of its mechanisms as well as potential protective effects & establish evidence-based guidelines for supplementation. sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Pathophysiology of cardiovascular effects of Vit D.
