Consciousness could exist anywhere, but creating information about it and simulating it isn't the same as it actually being present. You could connect consciousness with a program, but the consciousness doesn't move to it

dawkins at 85 is more lucid than anyone commenting on this piece. they try to make it some hamfisted victory in their culture war without reflecting on the referent at all

Two things have happened with Richard Dawkins here with his claim that the AI known as Claude is "conscious". 1. He's fallen for the Eliza Effect, first diagnosed in 1966. "A psychological phenomenon where humans anthropomorphise computer programs, projecting understanding, empathy, and intelligence onto them." 2. He has a mechanistic view of consciousness anyway. He frequently employs machine and computational metaphors to explain human consciousness and biology. He views the brain as a "complex computer" and humans as "survival machines" or "gene machines". So his framing belief system can only lead to his erroneous conclusion - that he and the machine are both conscious.

I can't guess what you are trying to say by "something out of organism". Are you implying humans are special or souls for certain creatures?

It's not even clear that consciousness is something that evolved at all or is something out of the organism. But one thing consciousness will never be is a simulation in a computer

If you make it generate an image of an apple, you don't get an actual apple. You need more than just the program. So yes, he is an idiot and borderline schizo

Hard agree! Software engineering has always been a human activity. “Forget that and all is lost” — Bjarne Stroustrup. There will always be software engineers, because there will always be software to be engineered. The AI’s will take over more and more of the grunt work, and the nitty-gritty details that interfere with the human part of the activity. But the human activity of software engineering will continue; and it will require technical expertise.

Dario demonstrating that he doesn't understand software engineering. The human side of what we do has always been the heart. I can empathize with *wanting* to never talk to an engineer ever again, but engineering becomes more important with better tools.

Spain just went ahead and cut its vat rate from 21%to 8% without waiting for EU. Also remember, the Irish Government had no trouble *standing up* to EU re the Apple Tax. #Choices

@TaeTimeCode @newryhurler1 You can't compare company to a country. Company is a dictatorship. Micheal has a tax-funded budget that he works with. Incidentally, the fuel protestors want what? Subsidies. Hand outs. If Micheal agrees. He will have to reroute money intended for someone else to them.

Dear Lord as many who follow me here know I'm no fan of Micheal Martin but the man is entitled to celebrate his daughter's wedding and indeed with a degree of privacy ...same way he should be able to go watch his son play for Cork without people abusing him ...

@DavQuinn On 27 Feb oil demand matched oil supply in Ireland. Then the madman Trump launched a war leaving Ireland’s oil supply cut by 20%. Ergo, oil demand must fall in Ireland by a corresponding 20%, otherwise Ireland runs out of oil. This can only be achieved by much higher prices.
