The US bases in the Gulf do not turn the Gulf into satellite states or strip their sovereignty. They’re part of mutually agreed upon defense partnerships similar to those between the US and other states in Europe and Asia. That said, this model requires a reset and the same is true regarding the Gulf’s relationship with Iran.

One of the most troubling aspects of this war has been Iran’s attacks on its Gulf neighbours. By targeting Gulf economies and civilian infrastructure, Iran is not only escalating the conflict but also creating uncertainty for millions of foreign workers who depend on these economies. From a strategic standpoint, this makes little sense. Targeting U.S. military assets may be part of direct confrontation and may be justified. But hitting neighbouring states indiscriminately does not meaningfully pressure the U.S. or improve Iran’s negotiating position. What it does instead is alienate neutral actors, push Gulf states firmly against Iran, and risk widening the war. In a conflict where leverage is everything, this approach weakens Iran’s position. Its real leverage lies in energy flows not in expanding the battlefield.

No demand on the US and Israel to stop escalating and no denunciation of Trump’s threaten to reduce Iran to the Stone Age. Think of the implication of this open threat to commit what would be an egregious war crime, even if it is inconceivable that the US will carry through this threat. What is dangerous is normalising such discourse. These one-sided demands on Iran show the spinelessness of European leaders with some exceptions. This does not mean no appeals for de-escalation should be made to Iran as its actions are causing huge global turmoil too. But these appeals should be preceded by acknowledging the culpability of those who triggered this war for largely trumped up reasons.

I just had a great conversation with @POTUS. I totally support his ultimatum to the Iranian regime to open up the Strait of Hormuz and to do a peace deal. A massive military operation awaits Iran if they choose poorly. This regime has been severely crippled through Operation Epic Fury. Their reign of terror against the region and the world needs to come to an end, hopefully through a peace deal. After speaking with President Trump this morning, I am completely convinced that he will use overwhelming military force against the regime if they continue to impede the Strait of Hormuz and refuse a diplomatic solution to achieve our military objectives. If it’s not clear to Iran and others by now that President Trump means what he says then I don’t know when it will ever be. Choose wisely.

First, that U.S. allies, including the Gulf states that have so lavishly fetted Trump, would have essentially no influence over the decisions he makes. Second, that neither the U.S. president nor his cabinet would care about unprecedented disruptions in the global economy and would make it known publicly that they don’t care. Third, that the U.S. president could express glee about the prospect of endless escalation and the commission of war crimes and not a single part of the famous American system of checks and balances would block him from intensifying this idiotic, ruinous war. In the face of Israeli and American aggression, Iran chose a perfectly rational, if risky, strategy. They managed to make it work operationally.
