About an hour ago my girlfriend and I were in Walmart doing our usual grocery run. Today was wash day for my hair, so I was in the hair care aisle looking for my conditioner.
My girl was standing next to me comparing two shampoos when this sweet older white lady walks up and says politely, “Excuse me, sir… ma’am. Please don’t be offended by this.”
I already knew where this was going, but I smiled and said, “No worries, what’s up?”
She looked a little nervous but continued, “My husband and I just won our custody battle for our foster daughter. She’s a beautiful African American girl and her hair looks a lot like yours. I’m completely lost on how to take care of it. It’s so different from mine and our other kids. I’ve tried YouTube but I’m still struggling. Do you have any quick tips? If you’re busy it’s totally okay, I understand.”

My father walked out on my family when I was a kid. My mother raised us. I made my own way, joined the Marines, and built a life he had no part in. There are thousands of American boys doing the same thing right now, growing up determined to be better men than the fathers who left them.
