That’s a very convenient way to explain away Marxism’s failure to inspire the kind of civilizational loyalty Islam has inspired for fourteen centuries.
Islam didn’t create unity among billions because it’s “compatible with the oppressive status quo.” It did so because it speaks to the human being in full: body and soul, justice and mercy, obligation and meaning, this world and the next. A certain kind of modern-day Marxist reduces human beings to class interest and then acts shocked when people don’t want to live, die, pray, sacrifice, marry, bury their dead, and raise their children around a spreadsheet of material relations.
And the idea that Islam is compatible with the status quo would be news to every empire, dictator, colonizer, and secular regime that’s spent the last century trying to domesticate, surveil, ban, bomb, or co-opt it.
