Author and DJ Zakia Sewell is using British folk culture to challenge far-right nationalism. Sewell has journeyed around the British Isles exploring Britain’s folk resurgence for her debut book, Finding Albion: Myth, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain. Finding Albion builds on Sewell’s hit audio series for BBC Radio 4, which saw her seek out a different, more inclusive idea of “Britishness” beyond the usual national myths and symbols. They abandon them to PTSD, to alcoholism, to drug abuse, to homelessness and to suicide. We all know this. But what do we do about it? I’m on my way to Cuba for an emergency 3-day visit. I’ll be delivering medical aid to a children’s cancer hospital and joining an international delegation of MPs opposed to Trump’s new ban on any fuel entering the country. This cruel policy is putting lives at risk. It is an inhumane attempt to strangle the Cuban people. And Trump is even threatening that Cuba could be “next” after Iran. We must take a stand.
