Most people would just put out the fire. This guy chose a different path. A police officer arrives at a field to address an unauthorized open fire. The officer informs the individual that they are in violation of local village ordinances and must extinguish the fire and leave the property. The individual is highly non-compliant, refusing to follow the officer's commands, claiming ownership of the land, and repeatedly citing "constitutional rights" while refusing to cooperate. As the interaction progresses, the individual reaches into a bag. The officer, perceiving a threat that the bag may contain a weapon, draws their service firearm and orders the individual to keep their hands visible. A tense standoff ensues where the officer repeatedly attempts to de-escalate by ordering the individual to walk toward them and move away from the fire. The individual continues to argue, claiming they are hard of hearing and refusing to comply, leading the officer to keep them at gunpoint while awaiting backup. The video concludes with the officer maintaining distance and control of the scene until backup arrives to assist in securing the individual and the scene. The suspect was charged with resisting/obstructing, felony battery or threats to law enforcement, and disorderly conduct. He later took a plea deal, pleading no contest to resisting/obstructing and disordely conduct. The battery or threats to law enforcement charge was dismissed. He was ordered to pay $504.50.

A new report shows that 30% of Berkeley Calculus students are severely underprepared. These students have “non-passing rates as high as 46%.” From 2021-2023, “over 800 students (or 24% of the total population) did not pass their Calculus I classes.” Of the 500 among them who were tested for proficiency, “-63.6% came from the proficiency tier with severe preparation deficiency (0-2); -30.2% came from the proficiency tier of underprepared students (3-6); -6.2% came from the proficiency tier of prepared students (7-8).” “Obscuring these preparation gaps does not provide access; it provides a near-guaranteed introduction to failure for our most vulnerable students.”

"Current admissions practices do not provide a sufficiently reliable check on mathematical readiness for STEM majors." Over 280 University of California STEM faculty have signed an open letter calling on the Board of Regents to reinstate standardized testing in admissions:

Jason,
Jason,@jasonc_nc·
Why are we continually finding more ways to subsidize the wealthiest generation in our country’s history? 38% of all federal spending is for seniors. Of mandatory spending it is over half. And of age-assignable spending it is 62%. For a group that is 18% of the total population with more home equity, more stock holdings, and more savings. So the obvious answer is… exempt them from property taxes too, creating yet another reverse wealth transfer to be borne by the younger and poorer.

Has never been a better time in American history to be an older person. Amazing reverse value capture that continually increases.

I’ve heard faculty suggest that AI can be a good study buddy for minority/first gen students who don’t feel like they fit in, and I think we’re losing out on a big advantage of college if such students forego making the effort to find a study buddy because Claude is *right there*
Jesse@J3553V

@pschofie79 May also prevent you from having the classmates you wanted: in terms of conversing with someone who is engaged, comparing notes, etc.

44% of US homeowners are older than 60 She is effectively asking you to put 100% of the local county services tax burden on 56% of the people—people who are also still in the workforce paying income taxes, mortgages, and daycare tuition This is horrible policy
Nancy Mace@NancyMace

Our young men (mostly Black and Brown) are not going from school to prison because they are bored in school. That’s just where they are most days. Let’s not be afraid to say what’s causing so many to become incarcerated.
Michael Strong@flowidealism

People talk about the school-to-prison pipeline. I talk about the public school-to-prison pipeline. A lot of young men are bored silly, and end up getting in trouble. If we did not force them into this one-size-fits-all school, millions of lives would be better off.
