When I hear complaints from an Eng Mgr that a senior product engineer has to just sit idle for a few days while waiting on a spec from the PM, I am interested in hearing what’s blocking the PM, but I am a lot more interested in diagnosing the team culture that led to the idleness

The average Peloton subscriber used their Peloton for a workout 19.9 times per month this year. In 2020, that number was 24.7 workouts per month. That number may be falling, but it is still crazy high.

@moizali They probably took several courses on “leadership” and “entrepreneurship”, went on a “leadership trip” during the summer, and attended a dozen “leadership seminars” hosted by current/past CEOs.

Why does every graduate of Harvard Business School think they should be CEO of my company without (i) doing a lick of real work or (ii) understanding anything about running a real business? This isn't a case study - this is real life.

On a team, the use of the word “product” as a synonym for “product management” or “product managers” correlates highly with trouble. Example: When an engineer deflects a UX-related question with “That’s a product question”, implying “Don't ask me. That is a question for the PM”.

Moving your team from slides to long form writing is not just a process change. It is first and foremost a culture change. A writing culture values comprehension over aesthetics, nuance over certainty, clarity over charisma, deliberation over impulse, and rigor over hierarchy.

The antidote to a bad day is a good workout.
