@docrussjackson Question: Regarding ofcom rule 5.4, who would be regarded as the person providing the service? Presumably it couldn't be the holding company as that's not a person and would be a massive loophole if it is.

@DAaronovitch @FraserNelson @spectator Hmm. Well @GBNews is running this - away from @ofcom, on its website - a softball interview with someone from a think tank it neglects to mention is funded by the Hungarian state as an instrument of soft power, with the most extraordinary pro-Orban framing.

@Councillorsuzie @benonwine For the replies saying they'd like to go back to the 1950s, may I suggest some of you might not be alive now if we had 1950s mortality rates.

@Councillorsuzie @benonwine So what? This is a multi religious society and as Islam is the second most popular religion, it would be odd not to include a question about it on the religion section. Would You rather go back to the 1950s?

The strategy being used by Ben Delo's legal team is well known: target one weaker (financially) journo to see if there is a knock-on effect on the rest of the media. @GoodLawProject should get to work on this to protect public interest.
Mr Ethical 🚩@nw_nicholas

There are some lawyers who seem to believe that an overseas billionaire donating £4m to Reform having a criminal conviction for breaching money laundering laws, is not in the public interest. Good luck with that.

Very honoured that the forthright independent online title The Nerve, run by Sarah Donaldson, Jane Ferguson, Imogen Carter, Lynsey Irvine & Carole Cadwalladr, is running an article by me this Friday about ‘journacide’ — the deliberate killing of journalists in Gaza and Lebanon.

@KemiBadenoch @JamesCleverly This is flatly untrue. You even whipped your MPs to abstain on my amendment to grant Chagossians a referendum to self-determine their own future. That whipping operation directly led to the defection of @AndrewRosindell - a doughty advocate for Chagossians - to Reform.

Disinformation about London has become a global industry. The new “outrage economy” is growing - and it’s eating away at the bonds that hold our society together. That's why I'm calling for urgent action from social media companies and government. theguardian.com/media/2026/apr…

Israel’s Op. Eternal Darkness in Lebanon reminds me of filming in a Beirut hospital during the Israeli invasion of 1982. The doctors had to concentrate on the most life-threatening injuries, which were mostly internal. We filmed in the corridor outside the operating theatre. Each new stretcher paused so a line of young boys could grab the biggest chunks of shrapnel sticking out of the patients and yank them out under the direction of a nurse. The groaning of the victims as the shrapnel came out was something I can’t forget. Four decades on, similar things are happening yet again.

Billionaire Reform UK donor Ben Delo is overreaching with this legal threat because he is using UK privacy laws and data protection rules to pressure platforms like @X and Substack into removing accurate public references to his spent criminal conviction. The letter claims that his guilty plea for failing to maintain proper anti-money laundering controls at the huge crypto exchange BitMEX has become part of his private life under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights - the same ECHR that Reform wants to leave! The letter argues that there is no public interest in discussing the matter and that publishing it violates his rights under the UK GDPR. Yet this conviction was a major case involving a platform that handled trillions of dollars and carried real risks of facilitating illicit finance. Delo paid a ten-million-dollar fine and received probation after pleading guilty in the United States. Even though Trump pardoned him in 2025, the pardon does not wipe away the historical facts or the court records, and it has no automatic effect on how UK law treats public discussion of the events. Now that Delo is giving more than £4 MILLION to Reform UK, planning to move back to Britain, and funding political projects while presenting himself as a champion of free speech, the public has a clear and legitimate interest in knowing about his past. When someone with that kind of money and influence steps into politics and policy debates in a democracy, their background becomes highly relevant for transparency and accountability. Through his project called The Sanctuary (a suite of rooms overlooking Westminster Abbey) he provides free meeting space, catering, podcasting facilities, and networking opportunities specifically to groups and individuals who rail against impositions on free speech and political correctness, including the Triggernometry podcast, Restore Britain, and Advance UK. He has also funded Toby Young's Free Speech Union and is hailed by some as a free speech hero for creating this ecosystem where controversial views can be expressed openly! The law never intended the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act to let wealthy individuals airbrush verifiable public records from the internet whenever it suits them. This kind of threat exploits burdensome data protection rules to create a chilling effect on open discussion, and it goes far beyond what courts have allowed in similar cases, such as the Google delisting rulings. The move is particularly hypocritical because Delo has positioned himself and his donations as support for Reform UK, a party that loudly champions free speech and rails against government overreach and regulation. He talks about fighting bureaucratic tyranny and defending liberty, yet he is now deploying the very same complex privacy laws that critics say stifle expression to suppress factual information about himself! At The Sanctuary, he actively enables others to speak out against restrictions on speech while simultaneously sending lawyers’ letters to silence discussion of his own regulatory conviction. True advocates for free speech accept that uncomfortable truths about their own history can be discussed openly, instead of trying to silence them with legal threats. By doing this, Delo undermines the very principles he claims to support through his philanthropy and political funding and reveals a clear double standard: free speech is for everyone else, but not when it applies to his own record.

Wow. I’ve just received a threatening letter from Ben Delo’s solicitors Addleshaw Goddard. They are claiming, among other things, that it is unlawful to publish information about Delo’s conviction for an anti-money laundering offence in the US. They also say I cannot publish their letter. An extract is below. Is Delo going to get his solicitors to threaten everyone who mentions his conviction? How is this not a SLAPP? @sra_solicitors @DanNeidle
