@BuckyDucky2 @PhDPersuasion @waitbutwhy I’m not saying it’s immoral. I’m saying that as written above it literally doesn’t include others in the model. The model is self centered IE narcissistic. Can you tell me how that isn’t the case? Again, I’m not saying it’s immoral to be narcissistic.

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

I always love comments like this when people are debating whether or not free will exists. "Hard time accepting?" If you're right, they can't help it!

@morallawwithin Everyones given a pre-predicted choice to push a fat man, causing them to fall on a red button & block a train from hitting a blue button if <50% of the buttons pressed were blue then all non-pushers will be killed by lightning & immediately replaced by a clone w/ their memories

Everyone in the world will get to press one of two buttons. Yesterday, a super-accurate predictor predicted how it would turn out. If you press red, you will certainly survive. If you press blue, then you will live if and only if it was predicted that >50% would choose blue.

On glosso, you can rate your friends against each other in wars (e.g. most autistic, most 'mommy', kiki/bouba, etc), and they get an elo. My elo is very high in several flattering war types I don't think I should be high on, and I think this is probably because I'm high status in my local group. This freaks me out though - I suspect people are falsely viewing me as better along some axis because of some type of... power/popularity halo effect going on, and I did not realize the extent to which this was affecting perceptions of me

@DellAnnaLuca @mrnonsapiens @MaryCarmenOrd The argument is that in a realistic scenario people are much less internet brained and game theory oriented. Secondly, people on twitter disproportionately represent individualistic cultures. Most people from E/SE Asia are slamming blue in a heartbeat I suspect.

People are posting the results of a 58/42 poll as evidence most people would choose blue. But once we factor in that people act differently when their life is actually on the line, that’s for me evidence that red is the choice that maximizes lives saved.

I am so happy this red/blue thing happened. Twitter is so back. I love to argue about completely useless theoretical stuff, and although i see some chodes drawing parallels to contemporary politics I'm pleasantly surprised that its been reasonable uncommon.

@T1t1danslasauce @SSnuffalupagus @DeepDishEnjoyer This!! I don’t see people making this point often. But I think most Twitter users have no idea how much more individualistic Twitter is than the majority of the human population. I’m not saying that’s a good thing, it’s just a fact.

here's the last thing i'll say about the red/blue button debate. we now know that when polling ended, blue ended up winning. knowing this, isn't one going around trying to convince people to vote red unethical? absent of this proselytizing, people believe in a high trust society

@SSnuffalupagus @DeepDishEnjoyer That’s true, but it’s also true that hyper online people think in more abstract ways than less online people (see The Righteous Mind). I think when you include real people, especially those from collectivist cultures (China and SE Asia) the results get more blue.

@MurkaDurkah I don’t think you know much of about Chinese culture if you’re saying that. You think it’s more likely they’ll vote based on internet brained theories and current geopolitical rivalries, and not millennia of collectivist culture? Good luck with that.

@AnoniMo27336747 @MurkaDurkah Just anthropologically I’m really interested to see how Chinese people vote on this one. I think we’ll actually find that the individualistic take is far more rare there, and not for any of the internet-brained reasons being discussed. I’m not saying that’s a good thing.

The land darkens as a horrible alien monster fills the sky. “I have come to play games! You all must play my game. Let us begin.” “To begin, 1% of you must say ‘signal’. If you do not, all those that said ‘signal’ will die. What say you?!” The people ran in circles but a small crowd of hippies conglomerated and meekly shouted “signal”. “Sufficient!” boomed the voice from the sky, and the sky lightened. A week passed. The sky darkened again. “We will play again! Now it must be 10% that say ‘signal’.” The people milled. After some discussion the threshold was met, and life continued. “Ok now 20%!” Said the voice from the sky. The people felt braver now. This seemed to be working. A rowdy crowd shouted “signal”. and the voice was appeased. “50%!” Was the shout. People got right to work rallying their neighbors. It was easy. People felt good about themselves. They were the saviors of their planet. The guardians the warriors the knights. “Signal!” rose the cry and society continued. “75% now!” Boomed the voice. The usual portion went to work, but somethjng was off. Hesitation spread like a shiver. “Signal!” Shouted some confidently and then looked around in terror as others didn’t join them. Desperate pleas and a second wave of “signal” washed around. A great sigh as “I am pleased!” came from the sky. A week later and the sky turned black. “95% you will!” People were depressed. But one person shouted, “everyone! We just need to have no-one say signal! Then no one will die!” Another voice, “No we must all say signal! That is the way no one dies! We signallers are the true righteous. We have convinced masses to join us and have saved over 75% of the planet by our action. You must join us, we are obviously the right side!” The most resolute stood tall and held hands in a line. “We have come too far to give up. You may convince some but there’s no way you’ll convince everyone, and then their blood will be on your hands.” “Signal!!!” rose the rallying cry. All looked up waiting for the reply. “Sufficient” boomed the sky. “Now the final test. 100%!” In the awe inspiring, spine tingling, climax of a tabernacle choir “SIGNAL!!!” rose to the sky. Save for one voice. “It’s the rational choice! If they all just did it my way it no one would have died! They deserve it anyway for expecting people like me risk my life just so they can have their feeling of moral superiority.” “You have failed!!” Came the familiar thunder. A circle grew around the non-signaler. Everyone knew he would be dead in about 20 seconds. The question was who would move fast enough to get a satisfying blow before the crowd press honeyed movement and the body would be limp anyway. “Wait you moronic human fools!” Came the boom again. No sound less earth shaking would have stopped that murderous mob. “I’m not actually going to kill anyone! I’m not that crazy! I am just a missionary trying to strengthen the memetics of all these infant civilizations across the galaxy, and, well, I’ll also admit I’ve found nothing else is quite as amusing. But I digress. Let this be a lesson to you! If ever you are faced with a conundrum like this again you do not signal! A society that dies together is a society that dies. Live for yourself, live only for those closest to you, and your society will be strong. Groups will band together and their success will seem unbreakable but their lack of variation in outcomes will make them weak over time and they will fall all at once. Build your culture to prioritize the individual so you have the diversity to not all run off the same cliff at the same time. Do this and might even survive to become me.” And with that the horizon spanning monster shot into space and all the signalers were embarrassed but the all silently hated the non-signaler still. And they went back to their homes and their jobs but nothing felt quite the same because you just can’t ever match the adrenaline high of holier than though nearly mass suicide.

Liberals ended slavery and liberals gave women the right to vote, though, so your example is really stupid? Sorry I'm not a revolutionary who wants to overturn and destroy our entire system for styles of government that have all monumentally failed in the past?
dead domain@DomainDead

Steven you solely side with the status quo. Your rationale for most of what you oppose from progressives is that it’s not “how the law works” You are the kind of person that defended slavery and keeping women from voting. Because that was the system, that was “how it worked”

You believe that, but i know most of them are lying. When it comes down to it I guarentee you every single person there would pick red and claim they picked blue. Especially modern times. See that news story on the rape girl in the UK? Dozens of people walking past as she screams for help because she's a child being raped by grown men. Not a single person stopped to help. No one is putting their life in danger for the "good of the blue pushers" You all LARP on here that ur so altruistic and such good people but ur rotten to the core. Its all false virtue.

This question is being framed by a lot of people as the right decision morally (blue button) VS the right decision logically (red button), but pressing the red button is obviously wrong in both cases lol If your priority is self-preservation, you should press Blue!

@DaleB77682 @MachineKing23 @waitbutwhy Explain what makes blue high iq? A simple restructure of the question and most people will switch from blue to red. "Red = you're fine, Blue = you die unless more than half the people pick it" in this case red gets picked by 95%+ from knowledge that it won't win
