All right everyone, since it's almost college football season, I'm going to let you in on a secret: NCAA football coaches are all members of the FBI Witness Protection Program. They're given a ridiculous name and spend years learning how to coach at the college level. 1/x

@USRoute41 I'd have to figure out a good spot for it where conduit wouldn't look out of place on the side of the house.

@PaperworkNinja If you had to put aground rod in a 3/4 hole in the conrete is unough then fill in with cement after driving to rod. Put a small enclosure over it.

Using Google AI to upgrade and tweak antenna design. Different answers, sometimes conflicting depending on how you ask/describe particulars about the project. It helps sort thru what is on the web, but you need to gather the AI output and apply your own knowledge. @PaperworkNinja

@USRoute41 I have none of that available to me on this house plus overhead cable, phone and power lines. If I put my antenna away from those I would have to put it in the front yard and people tend to freak out when they see an antenna. Thankfully the phone and cable lines don't work now.

On that side of the house is a driveway but there's ground between it and the foundation. They say to keep wire short, but the other option was to run the coax lines to the bottom on the other side of the chimney and put the box on the bottom. I wanted the coax in the house to run thru the attic because I have an egress spot for that. Even if I did that the coax shield lenght would be plenty for a counterpoise, and the choke could have been put on the inside. The cables run to the sub basement anyway. But the ground wire from the arrestor would be shorter, not the wire to bond. That is buried from the rod, comes up at the corner of the building and then runs low on the bricks all the way to the house service conduit.

@USRoute41 If you're in a built up neighborhood with overhead power lines you're going to have trouble with reception. That's my biggest problem.

Every once in awhile I'll hear a click-bap. Something gets switched on and it does not appear to come from my house. Likely the coax shield and antenna masts are picking it up. It can't hurt. I also have a hard time hearing both side ot the Ham contact. The only household appliance that is a bother is the washing machine. I put a torroid on it;s power plug and it didn't do a thing. It's the washer control board and motor. It plays havoc with the MW broadcast band.

Awful news out of Fenway tonight, as Sox fans have taken hostages According to the fans’ spokesman, Big Timmy (no other name given), Poutine is “Canadian bullshit” & “queer” No word yet on how they received the cops’ good faith gift of Newports & a general child support amnesty

@USRoute41 I have 60 feet of wire stuck in my neighbor's sycamore down to the eaves and into my attic. If I used a grounded arrestor I'd have to drill through my driveway.

I think I'll do this in stages. I'll install the choke at the house side of the arrestor, the red shrink topside, in the enclosure. (I'll dm a pic.) Then disconnect the 9:1 ground lug and see how the 10 feet of coax shield and the non isolated arrestor works as a counterpoise. Then connect a counterpoise. If no change, I'll raise the UnUn 9:1 mast mount and put another 1:1 choke 1 foot below it. Then I can probably skip the inside choke 20 feet at the inside wall bulkhead as the 75 foot run of RG 213 will be choked from the arrestor (at the entrance). With a choke at the UnUn it just means I have to add a mount and weatherize it.

Also, could they maybe make a better engine for my Tiguan that doesn't need an extra quart of oil 1500 miles after an oil change? (They only worry if the car burns a quart every 500 miles or less.) That or build me a fucking Kubelwagen so I can make the hippies seethe kthx

Yes, on the end fed wires many do when they have plenty of coax shiled before it enters the house to use as a counterpoise. There I also get conflicts. The mfg told me to put the choke at the entrance. Their schematics show to place at a min of 30 feet after the 9:1. (Providing enough shield for a broadband counterpoise.) Then I have to ask, when the coax shield is functioning as the counterpoise for any lenght, does the arrestor (which is grounded via 4 gauge cable to an 8 ft rod which is then bonded to the house service ground) bleed off too much return path RF? Then some say that ground and bonding could feed back interference into the coax shield IF the choke is put on the antenna side of the arrestor. (The arrestors are bidirectional so I could place it on that side of the arrestor in the enclosure.) I know arrestors do not ground the center conductor. What I'm trying to do is get the best possible starting point to lower floor noise and interference which is not bad but varies. Right now I have the 9:1 ground lug connected to THE ground which includes two mast structures and all the 4 gauge cable. Likely too much of a counterpoise. :) They say multiple chokes are fine That you cannot over choke a feed line. If that is the case I can put a choke on the antenna side of the arrestor, one after 6 feet of coax runs inside the attic, and even another about 20 feet at a bulkhead before the radio. I even have 10 snap on ferrites behind the radio. Lenght of counterpoise is also all over the map. I settled on 17 feet. (7 feet more than what I have available before the arrestor.) They say take your lowest wavelenght in meters and multiply by .05 for the lenght. That's 14 feet for 3.5 mhz. 17 feet pops up all the time so an extra 3 feet won't skew anything. 95% of all this targets transmitter issues. For reception it is just optomizing for low noise floors and other RFI egress. The ARRL antenna book is long on theory and technicals but short on practicalities.

That does it. I'm going find a way to incorporate "scrotal cooling" into the marketing. Not only do they help keep your gear cool, but you can move without worrying about tearing the crotch out. As of writing, each pair of shorts have now been through 69 wash cycles. #nofade (yes, I'm documenting this for wear data)

@USRoute41 RF goes wherever it can. If you're using a counterpoise, choke your feedline near the arrestor or unun whichever is closer to the antenna.

@USRoute41 Some people with compromised antennas will use part of their feed line as a counterpoise and put the choke closer to the radio.
