Really interesting little blog about our recent Older Drivers Task Force report:
forbes.com/sites/carltonr…
English

@Turnditch_Man @thetimes Older drivers are more susceptible to serious injury and death due to their relative frailty, and so our report is all about trying to find ways to support older drivers for longer.
English

@SafeRoadDesign @thetimes From your own figures drivers under the age of 20 are five times more likely to cause pedestrian death than drivers in the 70 - 79 age group. So why the focus on the elderly in your report?
English

Older drivers should be allowed to run red lights without being penalised, a government-funded report has said #Echobox=1638458108-1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thetimes.co.uk/article/carele…

@DounePS congratulations on being highly commended for your entry to the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund competition

@susanelizh25 @LittleEcoT @EricEatsPickles @TfL @EuroRAP Oh and 2019 it was £33bn. Note that the figures in 2020 are lower due to the pandemic.
English

@LittleEcoT @EricEatsPickles @TfL I can’t see how the economic effect is calculated but sure others will know @EuroRAP @SafeRoadDesign

English

@susanelizh25 @LittleEcoT @EricEatsPickles @TfL @EuroRAP The £36bn is the calculation made by DfT. The cost is to society rather than the economy which is a bit subtle as it contains a 'willingness to pay' element which is quite nuanced. The table to look at is RAS 60003: #accident-and-casualty-costs-ras60" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">gov.uk/government/sta…

@CTWhite80 @LBC @NickFerrariLBC So much more effective to determine if they are safe to drive or not, than just to give points and leave people on the road who might endanger themselves and others.
English

@SafeRoadDesign @LBC @NickFerrariLBC They should get both…it’s no less dangerous for older people to run red lights than younger ones - but the underlying cause of their law breaking may be different.
English

Nick Ferrari on calls to let older people avoid points on their license: 'These people are dangerous.'
Rob Heard of the Older Drivers' Forum: 'They're not dangerous, no.'
@NickFerrariLBC: 'I'm so sorry, running a red light is not dangerous?'
English

@Telegraph If people would like to read the report it is here: roadsafetyfoundation.org/project/safe-d… and you will note no reference at all to running red lights.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire talking about older drivers this morning with Dr Suzy Charman from Road Safety Foundation UK following launch of the Task Force report this week. Kicks off around 10.34. Some real experiences from drivers,…lnkd.in/dN_z4Ucw lnkd.in/dWnSu7kz

@Turnditch_Man @thetimes If you would like to read it: roadsafetyfoundation.org/project/safe-d… - you might find that it differs a little from the headlines
English

@thetimes The worst thing about this report is that it was government funded. What a waste of public funds.
English

@thetimes The headline appears misleading as they are proposing swapping the 3-point penalty for having to retake your test and have an eyetest (from what I could read before paywall). So the penalty might might actually be complete removal of license (much more severe than currently!).
English

@Paquepaque5 @LBC @NickFerrariLBC A very good point about diabetes- the report also calls for greater understanding of peripheral neuropathy caused by diabetes. Suggest reading the report rather than the reports of the report.

Well, red light running wasn't actually mentioned in the press release or report and despite efforts to explain the report to the journalist, the headline-writer have run way with their own interpretation.
